Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

Life changing, lifted a lot of stress

I was directed to StepChange by a wellbeing team at work, the only regret I have is that I wish I'd have known about them sooner. They've been incredibly helpful, friendly and non judgemental. I don't know what I've have done without them. I've managed to reduce my debt being nearly £8k in 18 months and managed to reduce my spending and budget. Stepchange stepped in when I was going through a very tough time and assisted me to arrange a DMP and deal with my creditors. At that point, I didnt feel that I could do it alone and I was extremely grateful for all the help and support I received Reviewed on: 9th May 2026

Wouldn't recommend

The customer service team I find to be very slow in responding, and I have sometimes had to send the same information a few times as they have clearly not read the emails properly that I sent to them. I can never get through on the phone as it says my reference number is wrong, even though I am using the reference number they gave me. They have said they haven't received payments when it clearly shows the money from my bank account sent to them. Overall I wouldn't recommend them unfortunately. Reviewed on: 9th May 2026
