I was a nervous wreck with debts piling up after being made redundant. Stepchange was recommended by a family member and it was the best thing I ever did. They talked me through everything and set up a manageable payment scheme. Reviewed on: 19th May 2024

My finances were a complete mess

My finances were in a complete mess I did not know which way to turn or how to deal with my debts. I spoke to Step Change and they took me through a number of options and explained in detail the best option for me. Step Change recommended a Debt Management Plan. After a lot of hard work and very long phone calls with Step Change I drew up a budget this does take a great deal of effort and soul searching. You have to be ruthless when it comes to reducing your expenditure many of the things I was buying were totally unnecessary so I stopped them on advice from Step Change. There are to many to list but at the end of it with a great deal of help and support I was able to fix an amount that I could afford to pay to Step Change each month and they then obtain the agreement of my creditors to this proposal and they distribute the money every month on my behalf. It is a long and emotionally painful experience but at least when it is set up you know it is being paid and you can relax just a little bit. As part of the process I was advised to apply for "breathing space" from my creditors which is when the creditors agree to give you a break from interest payments and letters and so on it just gives you a chance to look at the whole financial situation you are in and to try your best to deal with the problems you are facing. I can say that without Step Change and the help they provided I simply would never have managed at all. I would say that whilst they are very kind and considerate they do tell you like it is and you soon learn that you have to be hard with yourself and face the harsh reality of your situation which at the end of the day you have brought upon yourself. I found the initial stages very very difficult as I went through the process and the debt management plan was set up I find it slightly easier to cope with but it remains difficult. Step Change are always at the end of the phone and they will always find an answer to whatever financial problems I have. I am deeply grateful for all their help and advice that they have given me and the work that they do to explain matters to my creditors which is something I could not do myself. If you need financial advice regarding debts Step Change are, in my view, the best. Reviewed on: 7th May 2026

After lockdown

Amazing experience.

Amazing experience. Life changing. Took all stress away at a massively difficult time. Smooth and excellent service every time. The support I have had over the years has been amazing and it enabled me to manage finances much better and it gave me confidence that all debt would be managed and I would be debt free, with a manageable monthly payment. Don't delay, peace of mind is not far away.

Debts had built up and repayments were becoming difficult. Speaking to MBNA about my inability to meet the monthly payment that month, the customer service advisor said, don't delay speak to Stepchange. I did so immediately. It was the best thing I have ever done, in terms of my finances. Excellent advice, no judgement and total understanding of my personal situation. With the help, creditors were no longer sending me demands - I hated hearing the postman, at the time. I have been following the plan and have reduced a massive debt (in excess of £50k) with only a year and a bit left to clear now. Stress free, and no longer worrying - fantastic. Changed my life

I had been struggling with debt for a long time and felt completely overwhelmed before contacting StepChange. From the very beginning, they were supportive, professional and non-judgemental, which made it much easier to open up about my situation. They took the time to fully understand my circumstances and clearly explained all my options without any pressure. With their help, I was able to put a realistic and manageable plan in place to deal with my debts. What really stood out was how compassionate and understanding they were throughout the whole process. I never felt judged, and they were always there when I needed reassurance or guidance.
