I made a big change with Step-Change

I once had a very good credit rating. My finances were all in order, and I had very little debt. Then came a very difficult divorce, and I found myself plummeting into deep debt and deeper despair. Things became very difficult and I didn't know what to do, or where to turn. I tried to struggle on, paying everything, but barely surviving. I hardly slept, I hardly ate. I was afraid to eat, to be honest, because money was so tight. This carried on for quite a few years until I'm ashamed to say I was almost at the point of 'giving up'. I just didn't see any way out of my predicament. It was only the love I have for my (adult) son that kept me going. And then, I found Step-Change. They gave me help and advice, which was priceless, but the most precious thing they gave me was hope. For the first time for many years, I had hope. The lady who helped me was incredibly kind, and very patient, listening to me, and explaining my choices, then detailing how to work out a payment plan that worked for me. (I could even afford food again!). She even filled out the forms online for me (I have eyesight issues). It will take a few years, but there IS an end planned to my debt. And I am happy that my debtors/debts are being paid. I have emailed Step-Change a few times with queries, and have always found them as helpful and as wonderful as that first time I contacted them. I have recommended them to others who are experiencing similar difficulties too. I also look forward to receiving their newsletters, which have helpful advice for different financial situations in which one may find oneself. Step-Change is a wonderful organisation, and I for one and very thankful, and grateful that I found them. Reviewed on: 22nd July 2021

Paying back debts

All the staff have really helped, calmed me down as I’ve been crying down the phone to them about my debt. I had been so scared for years of addressing my debt. StepChange enabled me to get plenty of information informally before I committed and when I was ready, it was so easy and they were so supportive and non judgmental.
