Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

I can’t thank StepChange enough!

I can’t thank StepChange enough for the support, the budgeting framework and their ‘influence’ with the banks who were happy to freeze interest and charges while we worked through the repayment plan. 18 months on and soon to retire debt free. The hardest thing for me to do was pick up the phone...

The hardest thing for me to do was pick up the phone and ask for help. I shouldn’t have worried as the first lady I spoke to was so kind, empathetic and understanding. After that everyone was so helpful. They listened to my struggles and to why I was in a financial mess and very slowly helped me to form a debt management plan. I cannot emphasise how much of a relief it was to know someone was willing to help me, and that I just needed to make one monthly payment to cover all my debts.
