Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

If you're struggling with debt, contact StepChange!

Got into serious debt with 10 credit cards, struggling to pay. Contacted StepChange debt charity and did a financial review of my income and outgoings. Was able to set up a manageable repayment plan. I provided them with all my details of my creditors and they contacted them in my behalf, so no having to call each creditor to explain my situation. Any updates I just email StepChange and they sort it out for me within a few days. Best thing of all StepChange don't charge you any fees like others do. Reviewed on: 25th May 2026
