Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

Step Change

I have been off work Sick for a while now and could not keep up Payments for my Credit Cards and Catalogues, I was really struggling and did not know where to turn. I turnt to Step Change and they helped me alot, they explained evetything to me and went Step by Step with me and now I do not have any worries about my debts. StepChange changed my life

Following a difficult separation I was left with close to £30,000 of debt. I was paying almost £1,000 a month, with £700 of that being interest. I didn’t think that I would ever be able to get a hold of it. StepChange set me up paying £217 per month, completely affordable within my budget. This May, I made my last payment. When I first heard about Stepchange things were a bit bleak, we had debt that we couldn’t cope with. Then my husband had two mini strokes, I was getting desperate with stress and worry. From the first phone call Stepchange reassured me that they could help. It just took a couple of calls to give them all the information they needed to help us. The horrid phone calls and letters stopped! We worked through a realistic budget, (Stepchange don’t want you to starve). Creditors accepted that we were working with Stepchange and agreed the monthly amounts offered. We are so relieved that our situation is under control. Keeping to a monthly budget is quite a fun challenge, we have saved hundreds using local marketplace sites. The thrill of tracking down what we need, especially if it has been pre-loved, and a fraction of buying new is like finding treasure. All the while our debts are shrinking with a couple gone altogether now. So if you are in a state about debt please get in touch with Stepchange, they are friendly and reassuring, not at all judgmental. You need to work with them, they are not clairvoyant. Wonderful

StepChange gave me clear, calm and easy‑to‑understand debt advice when I was really worried and didn’t know what to do. They listened carefully to my situation, explained all my options simply, and helped me set up a plan I could actually afford. Every person I spoke to was kind, patient and non‑judgmental — it took so much stress and weight off my shoulders. They handled all the talks with my creditors, which saved me so much worry and time. I was in very mess with my finance depressed suicidal given up but when I was told to get in touch with step change I was thinking another company that don’t care but I was wrong they helped me all the way very caring only very few organisations that they do care you feel you talking to a person and really understand your problems they really deserve royal approval and recognition from royal family for the work they do Reviewed on: 13th May 2026
