Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

Take the first step

I reached out to Stepchange at the beginning of 2025, stressed about my personal debt and wondering how I’d ever tackle it. The website is so easy to navigate and on the occasions I did call everyone I spoke to was super kind and supportive. Going on a DMP really has changed my life and I’m now only around 18 months away from being debt free. I couldn’t recommend them highly enough and I’m just sorry I didn’t take the first step sooner. Five years ago I had credit card debts above £20,000...

Five years ago I had credit card debts above £20,000, monthly committed payments of nearly £700 on an income under £2,000. This month I make my final payment of £252 and will be debt free.
