Poor advice

My husband found himself in difficulty following a gambling addiction that he had used a credit card for along with maxing out his overdraft. We went to StepChange for help, although their service was excellent I feel we were given wrong advice. We were advised to ignore any letters sent by creditors which resulted in a default on my husband's credit score for the sake of a small overdraft. Fast forward 3 years and all our debts were cleared and we were ready to look for a mortgage to find only 1 lender would consider us due to the default on my husband's credit score. It caused so much unnecessary stress and we are paying through our nose in interest now. Reviewed on: 22nd April 2025

Dare to hope,!

I have been very ill with cancer. During my treatments I took my eye off the ball as the saying goes. Was too ill to deal with post and many many calls from people demanding money. I was becoming paranoid about the phone,the postman. Well debts don’t go away I didn’t know where or who to turn to, my life was such a mess, I was even contemplating ending it all. A friend came here and said why don’t we ring Stepchange the debt charity. I had nothing to lose but from that very first call, they made me feel like we can sort this out together and took me through every single step. Every person I spoke with was efficient,nothing was too much trouble, kind and compassionate. Made me feel like perhaps I could live a life. Am not the only person this happens to. Quite a bit of paperwork which I found daunting but even if I was stuck on silly questions I always got a real person to speak with. I can’t praise them high enough Reviewed on: 27th August 2024
