We have used Sumup for our card machines for a few years and decided to open a business account with them. All it took was literally a click of a button (first red flag) which seemed way too easy but we figured the reason it was so easy was was because we were already customers. Within a few days, when I logged into the app, it was asking me to verify my identity and would not allow me to see any information relating to my business account until I verified my identity. I have now been trying do the required verification for several weeks but have been unable to complete the verification. The app and desktop site are completely useless. I have spent about ten hours over the last week on their chat with their incompetent agents trying to do it and still no joy. Yesterday I was told that the “Verification Team” needed to contact me. Considering verification was the goal since day one, I have no idea why this wasn’t the first course of action. Asked for their email address but they wouldn’t provide it and said I had to wait for them to contact me. Still waiting. In the meantime, all my earnings have been going into the new business account which I have no access to. I tried to change my default payments on my Sumup machines to another account but they won’t let me do so. So all my earnings for the last six weeks are in an account that I am refused access to and all my future earnings are going to continue going into this account. That is nearly £30K of funds I am refused access to of MY MONEY. This is money I need to continue running my business, which is seasonal and this is my busiest time of the year. I need the money to buy more stock and this is having a huge impact on my business. I asked the Sumup chat agent for help to change the default account for my Sumup payments and they refused because I am not verified! This doesn’t even seem legal. I hadn’t had the best experience with Sumup prior to this but it felt that it made sense when opening the business account to use them so that everything was in the one place but how wrong I was. If you are reading this, whatever you do, DON’T USE SUMUP! They are thieves who prevent you access to your own money and then have useless/non existent customer service because it benefits them that you cannot access your money. Worst company out there. I’ve Extremely Disappointed

I’ve been using SumUp as a sole trader, and everything was verified and working fine at first. However, shortly after receiving legitimate customer payments for completed services, SumUp suddenly froze my account and later terminated it without clear reasoning. I provided all required business details, invoices, and proof of work, yet they refused to review the decision or release my funds — money that belongs to my customers’ completed jobs. As a small business owner, this has caused a serious cash flow problem and unnecessary stress. Their communication is very limited, and there seems to be no appeal process even when all transactions are legitimate. It feels like small traders are left without support or a fair way to resolve issues. I’ve now requested immediate access to my funds or a proper review of my case. I hope this helps other business owners think twice before relying on SumUp for their main payment system. Reviewed on: 16th October 2025

Been waiting a month for a returned… Been waiting a month for a returned card reader to be refunded. Complete and utter unprofessional company. Go to zettle instead. Another day of trying to get my refund that they are going in circles trying not to give. IGNORE the 30 day return policy on their website, they do not fullfill it. Reviewed on: 7th August 2025

STAY AWAY SumUp doesn't work

Opened business 2/6/25. Fully verified with all the necessary documents provided to SumUp. It's a health clinic and NHS commissioned organisation. and so far every single transaction has failed through the SumUp tap to pay. 10 transactions failed each with their own transaction ID. all with different card providers. I've tried 3 separate times to chat to them online to sort this out but the advisors don't know what to do. You can only chat to them online, and the wait is minimum 40 minutes. And then if you don't respond (because maybe you're in the middle of a consultation) they close the chat. No contact number available. They won't wait for you online I raised a complaint via wecare sumup.com. Still no response. For the time being, we are doing bank transfers, which is cheaper than using SumUp and less hassle. It's mad that SumUp are willing to forgo the fee they could've made. I wouldn't mind paying this fee if the actually technology worked? Now, my patients prefer the bank transfer method. However we are instead looking at other providers like lopay to replace SumUp at our organisation completely. My own business bank has advised there are no issues with my account as they have already been accepting payments and I'm not on any suspicious list. Reviewed on: 2nd July 2025

Great service cheap rates

Very happy with the service, very effective as long as you have a good internet network. Quick transfer from card reader to bank account, no delays overall very effective. Happy with the fact I can also have an online E-commerce store(website) which is amazing! I can also send out invoices to my customers which again is just great as it helps the business appear just a little bit more organised and professional. Reviewed on: 8th February 2023

Treated like a criminal

2 weeks asking me for my online presence when I told them I don't have a website and then to be told for security reasons they terminated my profile, just like that. Reviewed on: 19th December 2022

Pos lite table

What a joke 2 weeks still waiting for my pos lite to come that I payed £178.80 for. They advised it saying if you order from the 24th you will get it in 2-3 days I keep ringing and emailing them and all they say is your order is a high priority still nothing has came they think by offering me £15 fee free I keep my mouth shut it is becoming a joke if it’s not with me by next week I will be contacting training standards as they have taken my money and not sending my order in the time frame they have said I would receive it and another reason they are blaming is that they have a high demand for the pos lite tablet.
