My widowed mother in law is 84 and in 10 years she has not made a claim and has paid around £40,000 in premiums. My wife has to make all the enquiries on behalf of her mother and then relay the information to her. She has seen a consultant at a local private hospital and he decided she needed to go to the local general hospital (The only one in the area) to have laser treatment prior to a cataract operation. In making phone calls, they are well aware that my wife is handling, but notwithstanding that we have more understanding of procedures, Bupa still managed to confuse us by saying that our hospital was not a Bupa participating hospital. Bearing in mind that Eastbourne has a population of well over 100,000, we did not understand this and no attempt was made to explain why she could not go to the district hospital. The consultant does not operate anywhere else, so in that case we would be left without a consultant. Why can’t staff take the time to explain. Do they not have any thought that an 84 year old woman may, and in this case is, extremely worried about having any type of operation. Bupa need to do better and customer skills at present fall far short of what they ought to be.

They lose important paper work, don't believe what the customer says. Hang on phone for hours. Depends on whom you speak to as to how they answer your question, from poor to bad. Heard very bad reports from friends and relations in the past about BUPA but didn't believe them until it has happened to me.

Recieved very poor customer service from them. Having been with them for over 10 years and transfered with them between the UK and Australia, they trebled our fee on our return, despite being with them for years. We were penalised for being existing customers - new customers got a far better deal.

We have been with BUPA for over 10 years in both the UK and Australia.
In Australia they frequently told us we were covered for things and then when we went to claim, we found we were not covered. It was only when they listened to the call recordings when we complained, that they agreed that they had said we were covered and paid up. Suffice to say, I would not recommend their Australian operations.
When we moved back to the UK we expected to be able to continue our cover (as we had been able to when we moved to Australia). However, in order to continue our cover they want over 280 pounds per month for 1 adult and 2 children. They told us there was only one option and we could take it or leave it. I went with April Health Insurance at a quarter of the price. When I companied to BUPA about the cost I recieved a call from a manager saying that the team members I had spoken to (3 of them) had got it wrong and there were a variety of options available. This showed me that BUPA cannot be trusted and provides very poor customer service. I got a follow up letter telling me that they had done nothing wrong and did not expect their staff to know their products.
Suffice to say, I would not recommend BUPA, nor would I buy any of their products again.

I recently had an operation covered by Bupa. My excess was £200. Which I paid. I then started getting more bills through the door. I phoned Bupa and it was explained to me that my policy had been renewed and that meant so had my excess. I said I wasn't happy with this as I was assured previously that the only amount I would be paying was £200 for the procedure I was having and at no point did any of the customer service representatives mention that the policy was nearing renewal and that meant my excess would be reset. The cust rep I just spoke to told me I should have been told, but I wasn't. I had a couple of times when I was told the previous people I had spoken to either should have said something or shouldn't have. It seemed like a shambles. So now I'm stuck with having to pay another £200 even though everything was authorised before renewal and just because invoices were received just after my renewal date. If I had been warned about the excess reset, I could have asked the hospitals to try and get the invoices in before a certain date. But it was not mentioned in any of the many conversations I had with Bupa. I will be telling people to avoid Bupa.

In my experience BUPA really listens to health experts to understand what healthcare their clients need. I received medical help long-term and was told not to expect health insurance to cover long-term treatment, but BUPA worked with my therapist to understand what was the best way forward and they ended up covering the whole treatment.

BUPA Travel Insurance looks good from the comparison charts, but if you are buying it within a couple of days of departure particularly if you are travelling at short notice then this insurance is not for you. BUPA do not send you your travel insurance documents by e-mail like other companies do. I discovered this once payment had been taken from my card, had I known this beforehand I would not have bought it. Why? Well I had booked my travel the evening before I wished to travel due to a family emergency, and bought my travel insurance in the morning before leaving. So I ended up travelling with a travel insurance reference number and a telephone number for BUPA if I needed to make a claim whilst away. My insurance documents arrived in the post two weeks after I had bought the insurance and a week after I had arrived home. Sorry BUPA but this was absolutely of no use to me at all. So the moral of this is, if you need last minute travel insurance don't buy from BUPA.
