Savings to support imaginative carbon-saving projects and houses

The Ecology stated life in 1981 with a capital of £5000 and an aspiration to become an ethical lender for sustainable housing projects. According to Wikipedia: The purpose of the Society is to achieve the greatest degree of environmental sustainability. It lends money to create and maintain sustainable housing stock, preferably with sustainable communities and green enterprise. Its funding is secured with the least degree of environmental degradation possible, and with the greatest degree of stakeholder endorsement obtainable. It has filled a niche role all its life and now has assets approaching £200 million. Its AGMs before lockdown attracted hundreds of savers and borrowers and provided a forum for discussions on all the green issues of the day. I am proud to be a saver with the Ecology. Such important work

Housing represents a high proportion of our carbon emissions. Ecology work with their customers to ensure that their carbon us is minimised, both during construction and while the home is being lived in. If only more lenders encouraged this in their borrowers. Reviewed on: 11th March 2021

Truly the best building society in the UK

I have saved and saved and will be aiming to use this to retrofit a little semi so I am not going to be in fuel poverty when I retire soon. Other schemes and places are all talk and you fond very little action but the Ecology is committed to helping ordinary people. Reviewed on: 11th March 2021

An ethical home for your savings

I have had an Ecology account since I was 15. A unique building society that only lends on ecological properties so I know my savings are not being used to invest in things like arms, human rights violators, polluters etc. As a mutual it is run for benefit of its members - savers and borrowers- not share holders. My son introduced me to the ethical way of dealing with money

My father died in 2009 and I inherited a share of his estate. I wanted to share the money with my three children, all married with families, to use as they needed. My youngest son Miles was the one who introduced me to Ecology Bank as he asked me to use his share to set up an Ecology bank savings account for him. Using some of these savings he bought a plot of land in Wales 2012, where the family still live sustainably. As he needed to invest in the main infrastructure, he withdrew the amounts he needed. Prioritising essentials first such as a bore hole, solar power and a large polytunnel where they grow fruit and vegetables. They have planted an orchard and areas of woodland. They still have to save to invest in building an Eco-house. The land has building consent in perpetuity. So far he has dug the footings. I didn't succeed in investing savings in Ecology bank for myself until last year. I have only ever banked with building societies and felt I needed a physical bank where I could go to talk to advisors. I was forced into the internet way of banking during lockdown. This prompted me at the age of 78 to open an ecology savings account where a nominated amount each month is moved from my Nationwide current account to Ecology Building society. I chose the maximum I could. I am completely satisfied and very pleased to feel that my savings are now in a Building Society that supports Ecological ways of life which to my mind is the ethical way to live. Conservation is the way of life I endeavour to follow. I have worked as volunteer for community gardens wherever I have lived. Thank you Ecology Building Society for these opportunities. Great Service with Great Ethics

As an early customer of "The Ecology", I've always been happy, with their excellent, friendly customer service. The organisation does its best to involve it's members to help form its policies. Best interest rate for existing customers

I've had an easy access cash ISA with Ecology for nearly 9 years now and am happy to continue, as they still offer the best rate at 1.1%. Also I'm glad to support environmentally-friendly and affordable housing. Customer service is always reliable. Reviewed on: 11th March 2021

Saving, doing good, and particpating

EBS is small but well established and its members form a community with the AGM (except in lockdown) being a well-attended, informative and encouraging event. My money earns interest while helping to save the planet, through the society's lending policy of supporting eco-friendly properties and projects. Reviewed on: 11th March 2021

The joys of saving with The Ecology Building Society
