Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

Spending out of control

After retiring I found my spending out of control as it no longer matched my pension income. Friendly non judgmental employees outlined a number of alternatives for me to consider ie bankruptcy, selling my home to pay debt off or 6 year repayment plan. I choose the last option and although it has been a harder option than the others I have only a year left before my debt is fully paid. Each year we complete a review of my income to ensure I can still manage my repayments or if it needs to be amended. Excellent service, thank you. Reviewed on: 27th May 2026

It is very difficult to reach out and admit things have gone very financially wrong. The phone assistance was great and put me at ease. The service is excellent and really changed me from constantly afraid and stressed about my circumstances to it being something I'm aware of but feel less depressed and tearful than I did.
