Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

Wonderful

StepChange gave me clear, calm and easy‑to‑understand debt advice when I was really worried and didn’t know what to do. They listened carefully to my situation, explained all my options simply, and helped me set up a plan I could actually afford. Every person I spoke to was kind, patient and non‑judgmental — it took so much stress and weight off my shoulders. They handled all the talks with my creditors, which saved me so much worry and time. When I was at my lowest with worry and anxiousness, I turned first to Citizens Advice who were very helpful and passed me over to Stepchange. From the very first phone call to them, I felt a lot better and they got me into a positive frame of mind. With a lot of determination, year by year, I have managed to reduce my debt and expect to clear everything by the Autumn. Reviewed on: 13th May 2026

I was in a state of panic when I phoned for help. I didn't know what to expect or how things were going to go forward. When they answered and assisted me through the process, it was like they lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. I could actually breath again.
