Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

Due to having Bi-Polar i was constantly in debt because in manic episodes i uad no control ovrr my behaviour which centred around purchasing evrything and anything and debts mounted. I declared bankruptcy in my late 20's as i was under the care of an NHS psychiatric team and put on medication. I felt it was a new start. Reviewed on: 6th May 2026

Amazing help

Stepchange have helped me turn from being worried I'll never get out of debt to giving me a date I will be debt free. I was spiralling out of control trying to jiggle things about and going without food because I just couldn't afford it. But now I can and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. When I realised, that I couldn’t manage when my husband left, was a complete wake up call. I didn’t know where to begin. A friend recommended a DMP, I had know idea what one was. I was terrified of telling anyone my problems, as I was totally ashamed. I took the first step and contacted Stepchange, the person I spoke with was non judgemental, and helped me all the way. He came up with a plan I could afford, and I decided on areas that I could cut back on. I have nothing but praise for the staff, not once have they rushed me, or judged me.
