Dare to hope,!

I have been very ill with cancer. During my treatments I took my eye off the ball as the saying goes. Was too ill to deal with post and many many calls from people demanding money. I was becoming paranoid about the phone,the postman. Well debts don’t go away I didn’t know where or who to turn to, my life was such a mess, I was even contemplating ending it all. A friend came here and said why don’t we ring Stepchange the debt charity. I had nothing to lose but from that very first call, they made me feel like we can sort this out together and took me through every single step. Every person I spoke with was efficient,nothing was too much trouble, kind and compassionate. Made me feel like perhaps I could live a life. Am not the only person this happens to. Quite a bit of paperwork which I found daunting but even if I was stuck on silly questions I always got a real person to speak with. I can’t praise them high enough Reviewed on: 27th August 2024

Rescued me

I got into debt and tried to pay it off but my outgoings began to outstrip my incoming. I was losing sleep and stressed out every time the post arrived. I saw stepchange and they helped me with everything - they got me a cooling off period whilst they sorted out my finances. The system allows for me to up my payments if I am in a position to do so which gives me the autonomy to manage with background support from experts. I am now 4 years in and will be debt free in the next 2 years which is a huge weight off my shoulders. Reviewed on: 20th June 2025

Step Change are life savers. When you get into a financial mess that's encouraged by the greedy banks, that leave you in such a state that you feel you are a failure and no future. They are truly a light at the end of the tunnel and stop the wolves from the door and give you breathing room and help to go over your finances to get you back on your feet and start living again. I can honestly say they saved my life when I felt I had nothing left to live for and helped my family to get on with our lives. Step change has made a huge difference to me.

Step change has made a huge difference to me. After my divorce I felt so out of control with my finances. Despite being lucky enough to be in a well paid job we'd accumulated debts over the years having had our 3 children young and periods of redundancy and very low income at the even the children were young. I was struggling to make my payments each month and was paying so much interest that the debts just kept spiralling out of control. I felt ashamed and dreaded every brown letter. I was too embarrassed to tell anyone and it affected my mental health. I didn't think stepchange would be able to help because I had a good salary. I was terrified they'd make me take an IVA. When I actually plucked up the courage to call them for advice I wished I'd done it years ago. The advisor was so kind, understanding and non judgemental. It was a huge relief.
