When I realised my debt had got completely out of hand, I panicked. The interest alone was costing me over £250 a month on top of my repayments, and I couldn't see any realistic way of paying it back without help. I had got myself into a situation that I couldn't get out of, and for a while, I couldn't see a way forward. My anxiety skyrocketed, and I could no longer stay in denial about the problem. I felt angry and disappointed in myself for allowing things to get to that point. My mental health suffered badly. I was depressed, and I didn't want to leave the house because I simply couldn't afford to. Eventually, I opened up to a friend about what I was going through. She calmly suggested that I speak to StepChange. Through her work, she had experience of the support they provide and reassured me that they were friendly, professional and understanding. I visited the website, followed the guidance and completed the forms. They responded quickly, and for the first time in a long time I felt hopeful. The relief was overwhelming. It genuinely felt like the sun had come out again and that there was finally a way out of the mess I had found myself in. I provided details of all my debts, my income and my monthly budget. StepChange helped me work out an affordable monthly payment and contacted my creditors on my behalf. They did so much of the heavy lifting for me at a time when I felt completely overwhelmed. They also gave me advice about freezing interest and charges, which gave me some breathing space and allowed me to focus on getting my life back on track. Looking for debt advice can be terrifying. There are so many worries and questions running through your mind, whether you'll be judged, whether you'll be scammed, or whether you'll somehow end up paying even more. If you're struggling financially, I would encourage you to look into getting help. Reaching out to StepChange was one of the best decisions I've made. Repaying debt isn't easy, but I've adjusted to living within a budget. I owed over £17,500, and StepChange arranged a Debt Management Plan with affordable repayments of around £400 per month. I am incredibly grateful for the support, guidance and kindness they have shown throughout the process. I'm now two years into a three-year Debt Management Plan, and this time next year I will be debt free. Looking back, I'm so thankful that I asked for help when I did. I honestly don't know where I would be without this charity. If you or someone you know is struggling with debt, please don't suffer in silence. Help is available, and things can get better. I can not believe something that StepChange exists. They helped me so much without blame, there was no judgement, I did not feel shamed in anyway. I was so supported. I was allowed to speak openly and honestly about my debt. It was such a relief that someone understood. StepChange helped me set out how I was to pay back my debt in a way that I could afford. I have nearly paid my debt of £25K. I can't thank StepChange enough. If you have debt, I urge you to contact StepChange. Highly Recommend. Incredible Service

I highly recommend StepChange as they were incredibly helpful in my hour of need. After informing them of my income and expenditure, they told me what my affordable monthly payment to them would be. They sorted out all the paperwork that was needed and contacted all of my creditors so that I didn’t have to, thus creating less stress and helping my mental health. They were fantastic! If I have a query, I will contact them and everything is resolved. They are amazing. Their website is easy to navigate and changes can be made to reduce or increase your monthly payments, depending on your situation. All debts are in one place and you can check on the outstanding balances and how much you have paid to your creditors. Once a year you submit a new income and expenditure statement and StepChange will calculate your new monthly payment. You can always get in touch with them to discuss any problems or concerns or just to speak to them. They are always available and are very helpful, understanding, supportive and compassionate. I can’t recommend them enough. If you are struggling like I was, please get in touch, it’s a massive weight lifted off your shoulders and you will feel so much better. Also, if any of your creditors change the debt over to another company, i.e debt collection agency, StepChange are informed so you don’t have to worry about anything. I’ve had a couple which I have had to inform StepChange with regards to the new debt company’s bank details but other than that, they will contact StepChange to confirm everything. Nothing changes apart from the new name and bank details. Your monthly payment to them stays the same. When I get these letters, I always check my debt management plan to make sure the new debtor has been set up and a quick phone call to StepChange to confirm that this is in order. If in doubt, just phone them, they will put your mind at ease. Reviewed on: 4th June 2026

I was physically & mentally drained with my debts, i contacted stepchange filled the forms in with what i was paying out & what money i had left to last the rest of the month, a plan was made up to pay my creditors & instantly i felt relieved, without my visit to stepchange i would still be mentally drained, cannot praise them highly enough.
