Smile Bank is an ethical online bank. Its Current Account doesn’t charge a monthly fee and is available for individuals and as a joint account. Every Smile Current Account comes with a £500 overdraft. Applicants must be eligible for the overdraft to open the account.

does what it says on the tin!

Cant fault this bank - online services are top class. it's all there at the touch of a button and if you really need to talk to someone you can go in to any co-operative bank. Have only had to contact the bank twice in about 14 years and the customer service was great - all sorted within a few minutes. you want a no-nonsense bank, with many online facilities, and a free overdraft then this is the one Reviewed on: 22nd June 2016

Easy and Safe

There when I need them.

A. 250 pound overdraft is free on my Smilemore account every month. AND I love the new feature to be able to choose a future date to pay a business or a person. Smile do not bother me with advertisements but are there when needed for example Insurance queries. Great. Reviewed on: 23rd January 2026

Not so easy to contact recently

They used to be very easy to contact but the last few times that I have tried to contact them I have either had to wait ages on the phone or else they tell me that they are closed. There is no ability to 'chat' with them and there is no possibility of them answering a question if it is at a weekend. Reviewed on: 9th March 2025

A truly Ethical Bank for the Common Good.....

I have been with Smile Bank aka Co op bank for many years. I have always found it effective adventurous, notably as the first internet bank. Few branches I agree but the Post Office provides access to cash if needed. I sincerely hope the arrangement with the Coventry Building Society is fulfilled. The outcome will be supet ethical. A bank with ethics and great digital access

Easy to use current account via a mobile app, online banking, branch and access via Post Office. Via online banking the secure messaging is efficient and convenient. The account has an automatic £500 overdraft which is helpful. Good ethical bank, part of The Co-operative Bank. Reviewed on: 3rd April 2024
