Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

StepChange have been so helpful, caring and understanding. They explained everything I need to know and understand, they’ve really helped me get my finances under control and budget efficiently. I fell into hard times becoming homeless after my landlord sold the house and moving into a hotel so sorting my finances was a weight off my shoulders and I’m very thankful for all the help I’ve received and advise. If I need to decrease or increase my monthly payment, it is very easy to do so and they are so helpful when I have rang. Their website tells me when I will be debt free and that is something that offers me so much hope! Making one payment to my creditors is so much easier than paying several people plus interest and it’s made it so much less stressful. I’m very grateful for the help I’ve received and I’m on the right track to paying everything off and living stress free again. Life gets hectic and expensive and not having to worry about collections or “final warnings” has really helped my mental health. Reviewed on: 27th May 2026
