Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

From October 2022, after my partner died, I tried to keep paying my Credit Cards, and Loans, but it was to much for me to cope with as the income had dropped a great deal, so after watching Martin Lewis on tv I decided to go to StepChange online, I filled in the form, hiding nothing and within about a week I received an email saying my Debt Repayment Plan was all set up, it reduced my repayments by £377 a month, StepChange did all the negotiating with my 10 creditors too, my first re[ayment was in February 2023, I still have just over 5 years to go but I also have peace of mind and know I will repay every penny I used / borrowed so will also have a clear conscience as well when I’m done, I was reckless with money for sure and will NEVER apply for another Credit Card or Loan when I’ve cleared my current debts…thank you StepChange…Brian. I have been with you service for over seven years up to now the help and support and your advice are phenomenal. With out the StepChange Debt advice I would not know how to deal with my debt and the amount of stress I have experienced over the time was overwhelming and shameful. Step Change 2026

They helped me out of a mess without being judgemental. They sorted everything out and continue to communicate with my debtors so I don’t have to. They took away all the stress so I am able to sleep at night again. Reviewed on: 29th May 2026

Excellent support

I went into debt after a company I worked for did not pay me and I struggled. I am now on track & due to be debt free in October. If it wasn’t for Step Change I would still be struggling to date.
