Step Change provided informative and easily accessible financial management support, at a time when I felt overwhelmed by debt and without any other alternative repayment options. Reviewed on: 9th June 2025

No hows and whys just focused on getting you back on track

Great service I thought there was no we’re to turn when things got out of hand with loans and cards that were manageable until interest rates went up then I found struggling every month to make ends meet.. phoned up step change they guided me trough everything helped with my finances and worked out what I could afford to pay and contacted all debtors for me telling them I was in financial difficulties and that I were willing to pay what I owed but it would be less than requested and over a slightly longer time frame now it’s just one payment a month to step change a month and they distribute payments on my behalf great service strongly recommend now I’m back to my usual self. it saved my sanity

i have lots of health things wrong with me and i got myself in a lot of debt.when i got in touch with step change,i filled a form in,and my acc was set up and running very quickly.it felt like a huge weight had lifted from my whole body. i have thought about the state i was in with my finances,and realised that my problem started with my parents.being 1 of 8 children,we were brought up with debts.it was just the way it was in that era.that was my teaching about debt and how to manage it.i dont blame my parents for my debts,that is down to me.i wonder how many more adults in debt,have thought about where the majority of things start while they were just kids.we learn from our parents.i think thats worth a study,maybe. step change defo changed my life.they are amazing.peace to all.x Reviewed on: 8th July 2023

Up hill start!

Recognising you have a debt problem is a massive thing! It was an uphill challenge to admit to myself I was failing! I contacted Step Change and immediately was made to feel at ease and made to feel I had failed! This is a wonderful organisation that I’m sure more people could be helped by if they knew about them! Stepchange have helped me so much

When i first contacted stepchange, i was scared and nervos because i didnt know how i would cope with all the debt i had. My debt advisor sat down with me and we went through a budget and agreed that a DRO was my best option so i chose that. It was a very fast turnaround and they kept me informed all the way. Stepchange have also helped me to fix my council tax arrears and have set me up with dmp for my other debt. Would highley reccomend to anyone who needs support with money. A New Beginning!

After years of difficulty with both physical and mental health, l accrued debt. As l moved home several times without realising it l was hoping...wishing the debt would somehow magically dissolve. Burying my head in the sand..... However at each new address l never settled, the worry and anxiety of these debts wouldn't leave me. My mental health remained poor, l felt guilty? ashamed and scared ALL the time. Finally l realised the discomfort of hiding was worse than the discomfort of facing these problems head on. Step Change were recommended by a Neighbour and it took me months to find the courage to make contact. From the moment l did the man l initially spoke to was totally amazing!!! He dealt with my tears and anxiety with sensitivity and reassurance. I went on to speak to numerous case workers having been alloted a personal reference code. My health diagnoses was taken into account, l was treated with dignity and respect. Once my debts were put together l agreed an affordable payment plan which means in over 2 years my credit will be clear! I walk a couple of inches taller now....my shame has gone and l feel the terrible burden l was carrying has been lifted. The staff at Step Change literally enabled me to start afresh....they made me feel safe and not fear opening letters anymore. The dark days of messages from collection agencies are over.
