Review of the Tesco Bank, Home insurance:

Every little unhelpful!

1
Ever since we became home owners 7 years ago, we have been taking out Home Insurance from Tesco for majority of those years. We have never made a claim, which explains why we’ve had them as our insurer for so long. We just didn’t know how horrible they were. An honest mistake which will not be repeated. With Storm Atiyah, the children’s school closure for Xmas and sub –zero temperatures fast approaching, we found ourselves faced with a tiny issue with the boiler – the fan broke. It could have been a lot worse, but luckily all we needed was a replacement fan to be installed. It wasn’t so bad. Or so we thought, after Tesco told us that our policy covers for the boiler (under home emergency) for up to £1000 worth of repairs (yes, that’s one thousand pounds!). A plumber was sent to ‘look at’ the boiler. Strangely even before the plumber had made it to our house this counted as ‘an existing claim’ on the policy. The plumber examined the boiler, and reported that the issue was due to a ‘leak in the roof’. Now, we know a leak involves a drop or two of dripping water somewhere, so he pointed to a random watermark to prove his point. (It wasn’t ever seen before he entered the house and has magically disappeared and never made an appearance shortly after he left the premises). In short, there was no leak, the roof is just fine. He tried showing me the ‘leak’, but all I could make out was a few drops of water that could’ve ‘accidentally’ been splashed around (from the feed expansion tank located in the loft). Or it could be the WD40 that was left behind during the recent annual boiler maintenance and servicing. As a consequence, Tesco decides that the boiler is BER ‘beyond economic repair’ and refuses to get the boiler repaired. After a week of living in a freezing house with young children, I had to then contact a locally registered plumber, who immediately sourced a fan, and fixed the boiler within a day for around £300. It’s been working fine since then. Also co-incidentally the plumber sent by Tesco to ‘look at’ our boiler, works for MPSL Emergency (https://mpslemergency.co.uk/) a company that also does roof repairs. However, the fact hasn’t been verified yet whether they repair roofs with real or imaginary leaks. So kindly do your due diligence and research. This story will be forwarded to BBC Watchdog and any other organisation that is willing to investigate fraud and ridiculous insurance policies. Operation ‘Boycott Tesco’ is now at work – we’re not buying anything that has the name ‘Tesco’ on it, informing every single of our friends and family about their crooked policies, and making sure this story gets posted on as many review websites as possible. Please beware of such con artists who can effortlessly attribute a broken fan to a ‘roof leak’ and conjure up a watermark in the process. Stay safe from such crooks. Reviewed on: 20th December 2019

Didn't Answer The Phone

I waited about half-an-hour to get through to renew my home insurance. They didn't answer, so I went with Privilege instead. I am going to move my business and car insurance too. Not impressed. Poor show Tesco, you have just lost a very loyal customer. Reviewed on: 26th June 2023

We had a water leak situated behind a tiled wall from inside a shower cubicle within our upstairs bathroom. It appears that the water leak may have been active for a long time but only became apparent when the kitchen ceiling, adjacent bedroom wall, floor, ground floor WC and linen cupboard (all contiguous to the shower unit wall) became wet. Having called an available plumber he determined the likely source of the leak (which would require further investigation) and isolated the shower water feed.. On telephoning Tesco Home Insurance Claims (we have not made claims before), we were reassured by the response by the customer handler and that we had carried out the right course of action. She immediately gave us a claim reference and authority for the plumber to carry out further tracing work to identify the leak. After several days the plumber was available to return and identify the leak, which required extensive work (cutting through kitchen ceiling, removing all tiles from the shower and lifting carpets and floorboards. Tesco Home Insurance immediately reimbursed us for the payment of this investigation work, and designated Claims Consortium Group to provide an assessor to visit to determine the validity of the claim and likely cost of repair work. The friendly and knowledgeable assessor attended within a week not only validating the claim but giving us an expert advice on what remediation work would be required. Although Claims Consortium Group could carry out the work within the costs estimate, my wife's health issues meant that it was preferable for us that we had our local tradesmen to do the work required. The remedial repair company and Tesco Home Insurance agreed to this course of action and authorised a modified claim quote payment, which we believe under the circumstances was fair and acceptable. Tesco Home Insurance and the Claims Consortium Group provided excellent advice, efficient processes and procedures throughout this worrying event of circumstances and we would highly recommend their services. Tesco handled my claim with great ease, they addressed all of my questions right from the start and set out a timeline that they not only stuck to but also made it easy for me to feel confident I was being looked after. Reviewed on: 1st June 2023

Property & bldg now with Tescos, storm Noa on the 12th April took ridge tiles off and the surveyors report said that as the roof was old and obviously well worn before the storm then that was the reason that the ridge tiles came off, so Tescos not liable. Don't be fooled by the household name of Tescos. Reviewed on: 21st April 2023

My renewal arrived yesterday. Last year home insurance was £278 this year same house, same people no claims. As it arrived the day before Good Friday I am unable to contact then for four days, I can’t wait to hear the explanation. In the meantime I’ve have six other quote’s including Direct line nothing comes anywhere near that ridiculous quote. Won’t use them again be warned Reviewed on: 8th April 2023

Avoid at all Costs

1
It is impossible to contact Tesco Home Insurance should you need to. They do not publish an e-mail address but insist that you phone - this simply cannot be done - After 10 minutes of listening to an inane recorded message that is of no interest to anyone - you get to listen to never ending music. They are however very good at accepting your money and sending all e-mails from a "donotreply" address to ensure that you cannot speak to them. ie "take the money and run!" Atrocious Customer Service Reviewed on: 26th March 2023

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

When you read all the previous bad reviews there not lying! Tesco insurance is utter waste of money and time, they will do everything within there power to say wear and tear or any loop hole to not sort the issue or pay out. Shocking service. Avoid!! Reviewed on: 19th January 2023

Enquired about a leak, no claim made, yet this is not noted on my file so insurance more than doubled

We had a lead from a radiator that I phoned Tesco Insurance to find out what to do. They advised that this would not be covered by the policy, but the follow up remedial work maybe. I found out that all the work would be less than my excess, so phone to let them know I would not be claiming and paid for the work. When I got my new Tesco insurance quote in, it was over 100% more that the previous one and now the non-claim is noted on my file event though I didn't claim any money. Surely this is some sort of GDPR issue keeping data that is not needed? Anyway, didn't renew, will not renew either car insurance and will avoid. Reviewed on: 9th December 2022
