We already had an existing mortgage with Leek Building Society, and decided to speak to them first when we moved home. They made the process so easy and hassle free. Absolute nightmare

Leek were the main reason why it took so long for me to complete on my purchase. They were uncooperative and would dig their heels in. They refused to lend on my first purchase because they deemed the property unsellable, meaning I had to pull out after 3 months work. Then on my second purchase they were unhappy about a lack of mortgagee protection clause and demanded the lease be varied, even though it could have been covered with an indemnity insurance policy. Varying the lease took 2 months to do even though everything else was ready to go. Overall they made the entire process a nightmare and I am very unhappy with how it was all handled. In the end it took almost 6 months to complete on what would otherwise be a simple purchase and this was down to Leek and their uncooperativeness. I would have gone with another lender but I was so far down the line when they dug their heels in that it would have taken too much time to get another offer sorted. Do better. All of the mortgage applications that we receive are assessed on an individual basis against our lending criteria and there will be occasions where a property that an applicant is looking to purchase is not acceptable to us (which could be for a number of different reasons). Equally, it’s sometimes the case that the terms of an existing lease fall outside of our standard requirements and it’s not uncommon for us to request amendments before we’re able to proceed to completion. We have, however, passed your feedback about this onto our Mortgage Team and they’ll take this into account when considering any future changes to our lending requirements and criteria. Nothing short of a nightmare, where do I start. We started our full mortgage application with Leek 7 Weeks ago. Throughout the process we've been asked for the same documents multiple times, asked the same questions multiple times and provided the same attachments multiple times. Simple things such as locating payments and matching amounts to documents in addition to basic maths proved tricky for these guys. Things I would deem to be entry level administration. After 7 long, painfully frustrating weeks we were declined for 2 things that were visible in week 1... speechless. Don't waste your time. Reviewed on: 8th November 2024
