Safe but worth it as interest rates rise?

Used to be a dead cert for somewhere to keep money safe when savings interest rates were next to %zero. Now savings rates are returning a sum of sorts it's worth thinking if gambling £50 a month guaranteed loss of interest is worth it versus potential winnings. Reviewed on: 27th February 2025

fun , but don't expect a win too often

A chance of a huge win without losing your investment.

Premium Bonds are perhaps the most fun investment product the government can provide. Your money is backed up with government protection and there are numerous chances to win a month. I regularly win £25 a month. The average interest rate is never going to top the best buy tables but it is a solid investment with the chance of a £1 million prize each month. Easy to purchase, fun and simple

I have held Premium Bonds for a few years and enjoy doing so. My experience of using the National Savings and Investments website to monitor and purchase more bonds has been a positive one. Once logged in, navigation is quite simple. I am able to monitor the bonds I have purchased and view transaction and prize history. Purchasing new bonds is simple. You can set up a standing order or deposit a lump sum. Winning prizes comes down to the number of bonds you hold and pot luck. At the end of the day holding premium bonds is a fun investment that protects your original capital and gives you the chance to win cash prizes monthly. Reviewed on: 26th August 2015

More 'sensible' than the National Lottery for those who like a flutter but heaven help you if you need to change any details.

Of course Premium Bonds have their drawbacks, the low odds of winning prominent among them, but for people who enjoy the chance of winning big this NS&I product offers an opportunity that won't deprive them of their original capital investment. Basically, it's a bit of fun for spare cash. However, the fun element soon disappears if you need to change any of your contact details, your email address for example. The procedure is long and tortured... with no guarantee of a satisfactory outcome. In my case, after several attempts by phone and online to alter contact details it was necessary to withdraw my funds and close my account. Reviewed on: 9th August 2015
