Beware non use fees

1
I was happy with the card until I realised I was being charged £2 a month non use fees after I had not used the card during Covid. I accept this charge was in the small print but I find it unacceptable that I was not informed about the deductions from my card and did not find out until I realised £10 was missing from my account. The app is clearly designed to make it deliberately difficult to see the charges. The default page showing the Euros balance on your card shows ‘no transactions in the last 6 months’ and it is only when you navigate 6 pages to the GB balance page that you can find the deductions. I rang up and cancelled the card having felt I had been deliberately misled. Reviewed on: 29th June 2021

Hopeless and wrong advice

1
Unable to travel to Europe in 2020 because of Covid. Worried about the inactivity fees for 18 months non-use so rang the Sainsbury's cash passport helpline. Told I just needed to show activity - suggest adding £10. Did this. Now find I am being charged £2 a month inactivity. Topping the card up doesn't count! I need to go and make a purchase using the card today. Reviewed on: 27th January 2021

Awful, don't do it!

1
Works fine until you don't need it anymore. Turns out there is a non-use card fee every month and there is no correspondence about this at all. No email, no letter, so the fee keeps getting taken out with you none the wiser. When I finally got round to cancelling it, the operator was pretty incompetent. She said they would transfer the money back to my bank account. Great. But she was done with the call until I asked her if they had my bank details on record. They did not. So she had to get them off me. I had to prompt her to do this. And once the money is received in my bank account I have to call them again to let them know to close the account. I'm not sure why this can't be done immediately after giving the first instruction. Banks do this all the time. Very bizarre operation, very incompetent customer service, unethical in the way they charge fees. Just don't do it. Just open an account with a charger bank which lets you use your card abroad. Multi Currency Cash Passport

Was used in Australia with no problem until I had to use a PIN and it said incorrect PIN, even though I checked it again online. Then for some reason I couldn't log into the mobile app or online, it said they would send me a OTP and I am still waiting, 3 phone calls later and i am still no further forward. I think I have at least £400 on there but cant access it. Customer service said they will report it and get back to me ...... still waiting not impressed. My sister had the same problem... Wont use it again Reviewed on: 4th February 2020

USELESS CARD AND USELESS CUSTOMER SERVICE

1
This card is not smart, the customer service team are definitely not smart and give out false information and are completely incompetent aswell as unknowledged on how this bag of shite card actually does work!!! Purchased the card on the Uk and registered and loaded my card ready for my 3 week USA holiday, first few reloads on the website we’re fine as below £500, as soon as I tried to reload more than £500 via the website, payment failed each and every time for no reason, I’ve spent hours of my holiday on the phone to someone in Thailand (for a UK customer service????) to be told, wait 24 hours than try again, wait 72 hours than try again??? Sent a screenshot of message that kept appearing, spoke to 3 different supposedly called supervisors, one who guaranteed me I could reload my card on a set date and time and yes, it failed once again, the only way I could top up this card was once every 24 hours for no more than £500, for a family of 7 holidaying in Florida I needed more to book tickets and actually lost about 3-4 days of my holiday due to waiting for card that never worked! I must have spent 5-6 hours on the phone to them, being fed false information, even if you fail to top the card up, you have to wait 24 hours before you can try again? Yet, it is their card that is at error and not doing what it is supposed to do? How you are meant to load £5000 on in 24 hours when I only managed mobile top ups is a mystery to me! I’m home next week and definitely escalating to FOS as it has ruined my holiday plans, lost me days off my holiday, all because this card doesn’t actually do what it says it does, it is useless along with their customer service too! AVOID

1
Complete disaster! After using for five days in the U.S without any hitch we continued to Canada. The first hitch came when I tried to transfer the remaining US Dollars to Canadian Dollars. It took three attempts to try to do this; however this was done and the card used to pay for a meal on our first evening. Next morning a small purchase in a gift ship was declined as was an attempt to withdraw cash from an ATM. Phone call followed in which I was assured that the cards would be re-activated at once. Two hours later card declined in restaurant - 40 minute phone call little or no progress but cards would be re-acitivated in one hour. No good for restaurant paid bill with other card. One hour forty minutes later tried to use in wine shop declined again. Another phone call this time to be told that we had suspended the card ourselves which of course we had not. Most of last day of holiday spent on phone and still lots of our money on cash card whilst bills paid with something else. For a product marketed as safe and easy travel money this fails spectacularly; and no idea how much the phone calls are going to cost Reviewed on: 10th May 2019

!!!!!!!!!!!! AVOID !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1
Avoid and if cant definitely avoid the postal delivery!!!!! What a pain i am having to go through 3 days before my travel, forex ordered via Sainsburys Bank, they delivered me $100 short (delta between the actual currency and printed out letter that came with is that the envelope was short x2 $50 notes) Called Sainsbury bank now 4th time and they are having the investigation on! Its standard statement of "we are investigating", its like these guys dont care i have a flight to catch they have internal problems and they care the least! I have to call them everytime! their call centre numbers are slow "call waiting for agaent to be available" and once got through the agents had to put me on hold as much longer to read the complain and call their back office or where ever to get the update. What a nightmare for saving £2.00 and less in the conversion rate I have already spend a lot of time on the phone bill and restless nights without any update. Never ever again will go to them!!!!!!!!! There goes the brand trust!!! Never again in my life, I will use them other than to buy milk and bread!!!!! Reviewed on: 6th July 2018

£40 down for their fault

1
Having read advice on travel money cards, I bought £250 of Turkish lira at 5.9 to the pound on the Sainsbury’s travel card just over two weeks ago. However when trying to log in on line to view the account it became clear that the bank ( MasterCard) had incorrectly entered the security details that I had given them and thus I was unable to access my account. despite an hour on the phone to their customer services just before I flew to turkey on the 9 June. When in Turkey I was able to use the card once for £10 approx, usinga tap and pay card reader at the airport. However when I went to get cash out the ATM retained my card and I was unable to access the account for the entirety of my holiday and had to use a more expensive UK bank account instead. On return to the UK and after lengthy discussions with mastercards customer services the remaining Turkish lira has been transferred back to me in £ but at the rate of 6.8, meaning that I recieved £198 back. So , disregarding the additional costs of the other bank card,I am about £40 down for no fault of my own Reviewed on: 21st June 2018

Cash Passport card left me stranded on holiday

1
I have a Sainsbury Cash Passport card. On returning home off holiday I stopped to draw cash for my onward journey using the Cash Passport card and the Link machine had a fault and dispensed no money. Over the next 6 hours Link provided an email to say I had received no cash and that Cash Passport would be able to release the preauthorisation immediately. Not so they wanted 7 days before they would return my money. I was left stranded with no offers of help or interest at al from Cash Passport. I have since enquired at other Banks who all confirm that the preauthorization could have been released immediately !!!! My advice don't use Cash Passport as if you are stuck they are not interested!!! Reviewed on: 15th August 2017
