£1,000 p/m to £60 thanks to Stepchange

I approached step change after I became overwhelmed with debt repayments and got caught up in the horrific cycle of debt. I had a consultation that was blame-free (stepchange don't care why you've found yourself in debt, they care about how they can help you out of it) and were very helpful. I work in Finance and they were careful to advise if I had an obligation to tell my employer. In many cases, this isn't necessary. Stepchange facilitated the move from me paying the banks £1,000 a month to me now paying £60. It's manageable and I can live my life feeling a sense of dignity again. Reviewed on: 27th May 2025

This choice changed my life

I can sleep at night knowing that I will not have anyone knocking on my door looking for money. Before I went to Stepchange I ended up at the doctors & having to go on antidepressants because I was so exhausted with the worry of my situation. StepChange has helped bring my debt under control

My finances had got unmanageable - I wanted to pay back as much as I could, but my monthly income was being eaten away by increasing costs so I became impossible without more debt being incurred. The StepChange process, done largely online, was thorough but clear and has helped me to enter into an agreement that means I can pay back a reasonable chunk of the borrowed and owed money to my debtors over a set period of time. The light at the end of the tunnel is visible, I am able to manage the payment load and will soon be cleared of my own financial failings to start afresh from a money point of view. StepChange has changed my life.

For me help and support from StepChange has been life changing. As a result of ill health, advancing years and the major ongoing consequences of the Covid Pandemic on my work opportunities I found myself entering a downward spiral where I was trying to maintain everything I was used to with a dramatically reduced income. In no time at all I had run up debts just to cover genuine living expenses, certainly not to fund any frivolous, extravagances. I exhausted all of my savings trying to financially survive and to service the obscene rates of interest applied to overdrafts and credit cards. I realised fairly early on that this situation was dangerous especially when I was buying just about everything including essentials such as groceries on credit cards. I knew I had to do something about this situation but I experienced an unexpected paralysis where I couldn't face up to what I regarded as a personal failure knowing full well that it was unsustainable and only going one way. Then, purely by chance, I had a conversation with someone who had been in a similar position and who had changed their life by contacting StepChange and following their recommendations. I did the same, but even then it took me a while to come to terms with my perceived failure and finally document my exact financial position. StepChange did not judge, they just helped. Once everything was out in the open and a Debt Management Plan was instigated, my life changed. Everything they suggested made sense and was all based in common sense and probably most importantly was affordable and based on actual income. Gone were the endless sleepless nights punctuated in the darkest hours with worries about debt and the dread of yet another notification of rate increases and the endless manipulation of debt by transfer to a 0% card offer which only temporarily relieved the critical issue. I had also tended to shoulder the true extent of my predicament as I didn't want to worry my family. My home life improved as we could suddenly all see beyond this crisis and realise that there is a way to deal with this huge black cloud over your life. StepChange has helped me to restart my life again for which I am very grateful, and to come to terms and deal with all that has dragged me down for the last few years. Total relief
