Dare to hope,!

I have been very ill with cancer. During my treatments I took my eye off the ball as the saying goes. Was too ill to deal with post and many many calls from people demanding money. I was becoming paranoid about the phone,the postman. Well debts don’t go away I didn’t know where or who to turn to, my life was such a mess, I was even contemplating ending it all. A friend came here and said why don’t we ring Stepchange the debt charity. I had nothing to lose but from that very first call, they made me feel like we can sort this out together and took me through every single step. Every person I spoke with was efficient,nothing was too much trouble, kind and compassionate. Made me feel like perhaps I could live a life. Am not the only person this happens to. Quite a bit of paperwork which I found daunting but even if I was stuck on silly questions I always got a real person to speak with. I can’t praise them high enough Reviewed on: 27th August 2024

Number one choice for debt management

Was a bit apprehensive at first, couldn’t be more wrong. Put you at ease from the get go and made the whole process simple. Thank you Step Change

As a professional with 25 years experience and a London home, I hadn’t experienced debt or worried about money too much - I had savings! Five years later, an unexpected relocation due to a family member’s illness, Covid with little furlough as I now work through an agency on a zero hours contract and no access to benefits as schools were technically open, even though they didn’t need supply teachers had savings, I had been living on a credit card and quickly escalated my debt to £30,000 (£500 a month interest). Add a bereavement and several visits to court courtesy of the council and I hit inertia, then panic. I was working, but days are unpredictable and school holidays suddenly seemed long. Although embarrassed, I finally called StepChange. That day I felt better and had clear advice for what I could do. A Repayment plan was quickly in place and the debt didn’t seem so insurmountable. Several years later and it’s steadily shrinking. StepChange keep me regularly updated on the debt and a probable end date, with the opportunity to easily update any changes of circumstance.
