Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

Learn to use a spredsheet

Stepchange budgeting is no more than a starting point. I find a running spreadsheet to be an essential tool. The cheapest tablet or PC will serve, (but ALWAYS back-up your files). My current sheet was started in Jan 23 and is compiled through to Dec 27. In Dec 26 i made a note of the forecast balance for Dec 27, and the current forecast is within £40 of that. I check my spreadsheet each night against my current account and correct any anomaly. For me, the main benefit is that knowing my situation with reasonable certainty removes all worries. It's easy to balance cash flow by adjusting the timing of flexible payments versus those such as direct debits. I have been using Stepchange for over 10 years to manage a debt of over £50.000 and my forecast debt at Dec 27 will be £1293. In that time I have never missed a payment due to anyone, although on one occasion, by reason of an oversight, my current account dropped to just £12. Reviewed on: 28th May 2026

25k Debt Free

I was about 25k in debt and at a point of no return, was advised to look into Stepchange. Managed to consolidate all my loans into 1 monthly payment, set up a standing order so the money was paid directly on the date I was paid. Still received letters from loan companies but contacted Stepchange and they delt with everything. Repayments where at the maximum I could pay with little wiggle room but still getting paid and still surviving, debt is never going to be stress free but just used it as a learning experience and have since found budgeting loads easier since finishing my repayments. Its ok to ask for help

I was struggling with bills and my stress levels were through the roof and needed help (even though its hard to admit needing help) I found stepchange and they talked and helped me set up a plan and through out they have helped and supported me, I am very greatful to them and what they believe in Reviewed on: 28th May 2026

At a cross roads

I had reached a point where i didnt know what to do and the letters kept coming. I did not have a plan in regards to how i was going to service my debt and thought if i buried my head in the sand, then everything would go away. Which it didn't.... I found Ste Change on a comparison website and completed the initial information. I was able to speak to real person who made me feel that i was doing the right thing by accessing support before it became too out of hand. I did the budget and had my DMP agreed and have been paying ALL my debts since. It is going to take me a long time to clear all my debt but i don't feel like it is out of control and I now open my letters when i receive them as i am not traumatised by what they could potentially say. Dont get low make a Step to Change your debts!

I was very low with my debts and was recommended by a friend. Working through the online forms with Step Change was simple and straight forward and gave me a good insight to my issues. Contact was easy and the responses have always been quick and very helpful. I would recommend stepchange in a heart beat and the weight was lifted and haven't felt as low as I was in ages.
