Dare to hope,!

I have been very ill with cancer. During my treatments I took my eye off the ball as the saying goes. Was too ill to deal with post and many many calls from people demanding money. I was becoming paranoid about the phone,the postman. Well debts don’t go away I didn’t know where or who to turn to, my life was such a mess, I was even contemplating ending it all. A friend came here and said why don’t we ring Stepchange the debt charity. I had nothing to lose but from that very first call, they made me feel like we can sort this out together and took me through every single step. Every person I spoke with was efficient,nothing was too much trouble, kind and compassionate. Made me feel like perhaps I could live a life. Am not the only person this happens to. Quite a bit of paperwork which I found daunting but even if I was stuck on silly questions I always got a real person to speak with. I can’t praise them high enough Reviewed on: 27th August 2024

Highly recommend step change. Changed my life

Before step change I was living off credit cards, the interest alone was crippling me and was unable to get ahead of them. A friend recommended step change and it changed my life. I provided a list of lenders with amountd i owed, thry contacted each one and negotiated a payment plan, freezing all interest. I can see every month my debt going down because of them. Moving in the right direction, StepForward in my case!

I lost control of my finances and it was too late to salvage it without professional help. I was given by my bank a few options and I chose StepChange. Life-changing! I then started receiving letters from the credit card companies accepting the payments arrange by StepChange. I received updates every now and then. StepChange completely removed the dark clouds over my head. After a few months, it all sunk in, I was actually being pulled out of the quicksand, from that overwhelming debts! A very big thank you to StepChange! They are a "must-have" in the back pocket. I am not suggesting to go guns-blazing with unnecessary expenses, but it is definitely worth knowing there is help when needed. Reviewed on: 6th May 2026

Help when I needed it most

I was in trouble financially, things had got on top of me and I felt there was nowhere to turn, however I found Step Change and they really helped. Virtually all of the actions were on line so not lots of embarrassing phone calls, and Im now on the way to being debt free. Reviewed on: 6th May 2026

No one was coming to save me. Changed my life.

Step change has changed my life. Single parent, part time carer and full time nursing student - I was drowning in debt (22K) which accumulated from bad financial decision making, having children young, always in full-time work however with one income relied on credit cards to help - over 8 years this accumulated, I didn’t know a way out, I was offered an IVA through a private company however after realising only 8% of my monthly payback was going to the creditors it didn’t feel right. I borrowed the money - I wanted to PAY it ALL back a rightly so. Therefore a friend had used Step Change - I won’t lie, the time spent forumulating a plan, getting all the creditors in place and happy took 5-8 weeks however now repaying £384 a month (doable) and knowing my money is going back to creditors makes me feel on top of the world. I will never look at credit the same, I was young, no help from family or friends, children and single however working full time I was barely keeping myself above water - genuinely step change has changed my life. I have 4 years and 10 months with the them to pay my creditors off however this is doable and I’m meeting the payments each month now and not worrying about paying my creditor back - the stress is elevated. I would recommend Step Change to anyone. I knew noone was coming to save me, however StepChange gave me a life line and really changed my life. Thank you! Reviewed on: 6th May 2026
