In 2018 I was in deep financial trouble.

In 2018 I was in deep financial trouble. I had debts of over £36,000 and saw no way forward. It was suggested through a government web site that I contact Stepchange. I was somewhat sceptical, but I did make contact and it was one of the best things that I have ever done. They were not judgemental and assessed my financial situation and gave me a plan to go forward. 5 years on I still owe £20,000 but the figure is coming down every month, thanks to the affordable payment that I have agreed to make to my creditors. From day one stepchange managed to get the interest charges stopped, dealt with my creditors for me and work out a payment plan every 12 months that was both acceptable to my creditors and affordable to me. I cannot thank stepchange enough. They have allowed me to regain control of my finances and in doing so have given me my self respect back. Thank you stepchange and everyone who works for them. I am now debt free partly because of StepChange and their advice. I struggled for years trying to sort it out by myself and then with a debt management company that took a percentage of my unrealistic repayments, meaning my debts remained high. I can't thank the staff at StepChange enough for treating me with dignity and compassion and would highly recommend anyone struggling to give them a call. Worried over debts after marriage breakdown.

I was left with a lot of debt after I left my abusive husband. With two teenagers to support, I was left seriously considering how I would ever cope. I can't remember how I came across Stepchange, but they really have been my guardian angel. When I called they were so understanding, listened to me and explained what the process involved. It was easy to work through my income, expenditure and debts and to set a payment that I was able to afford. I've been with them now for nearly nine years, managing my debts on an ongoing review. My smaller debts are satisfied, with a few bigger ones to go. It's great to know that in another three years all those stressful and worrysome debts will be gone. Reviewed on: 2nd May 2024
