Dare to hope,!

I have been very ill with cancer. During my treatments I took my eye off the ball as the saying goes. Was too ill to deal with post and many many calls from people demanding money. I was becoming paranoid about the phone,the postman. Well debts don’t go away I didn’t know where or who to turn to, my life was such a mess, I was even contemplating ending it all. A friend came here and said why don’t we ring Stepchange the debt charity. I had nothing to lose but from that very first call, they made me feel like we can sort this out together and took me through every single step. Every person I spoke with was efficient,nothing was too much trouble, kind and compassionate. Made me feel like perhaps I could live a life. Am not the only person this happens to. Quite a bit of paperwork which I found daunting but even if I was stuck on silly questions I always got a real person to speak with. I can’t praise them high enough Reviewed on: 27th August 2024

Honest and practical help from StepChange

After months of worry and denial I finally contacted StepChange for some advice. They were (and are) totally non-judgmental, simply wanting to undertstand my situation and to offer a solution if possible. It was like having a weight removed from my shoulders, sharing the problem with someone who knew how to help. I cannot thanks StepChange enough for the help they have given me. Wish I'd done it sooner!

Wish I'd done it sooner, feel so in control and can see an end to debt, which I didn't really before. Had manageable (ISH) debt as two income family then separated from spouse and was suddenly over indebted - same income having to maintain two houses. Spent a few years really struggling and being very creative consolidating and reworking things, but for all the effort that took I was just delaying the inevitable. I went into a manageable plan where everything gets paid off and am about 18 months away from completing it. Everyone gets paid in full and in the years I've been paying it just ticks over nicely, whereas before it was a constant stress. Only regret is not doing it 5 years earlier.
