RAC auto renewed our policy RAC ‘auto renewed’ our policy, without telling us - we had already got alternative insurance. Cancelling RAC insurance is a real pain to do! Reviewed on: 25th January 2026

I’ve driven my car 300 miles in the last year due to COVID. I know this because I just had my MOT. So when my daughter’s partner had his car written off it made sense to let him use mine. He was not at fault. Sat at home when a delivery driver ploughed in to his parked car. He’s in his 30s, employed as a professional driver. Lots of no claims, no accidents, no convictions. You’d think it’d be a simple admin fee and small increase. Not with RAC. New 12 month policy at double the cost plus an admin fee of £25. Avoid at all cost! Reviewed on: 22nd October 2021

Rubbish service, stay away, don't touch them!

Misled when trying to cancel the policy by customer services when I contacted them to advise that car had been sold. Not told there would be a cancellation fee levied plus a late payment fee for the direct debit being cancelled. Once that had been settled they levied another addtl fee for something else without any advice to me. Reviewed on: 18th September 2021

Would not even recommend RAC to an enemy

Wouldn’t recommend it to my worst enemy. Staff are clueless and have no communication with one another and gave me 3 different ETA. With little updates. I had to call them personally to get updates Made me wait almost 4 hours on my own at night time on the motorway. Disgusting service, lied about not being able to book a taxi prior to mechanic being on the way but 3 hours later they booked a cab with no mechanic on the way. AVOID RAC AT ALL COSTS! Terrible Company

Absolutely the worst company to insure your car with - AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Completely uninterested in your requirements basically 'the computer says, no' Was charged £55 cancellation fee for being 3 days without a car - they would not allow me to keep my cover until my new car arrived. Disabled driver unfriendly

On the 23rd of August Not only did it cost £135.22 to cancel my insurance for the 31st August they canceled it straight away so I am a disabled driver lifted without a car for 8 days Reviewed on: 23rd August 2021

Just awful!

My mother needed to swap her insurance to a new vehicle and was currently insured by RAC. Even though she's been a loyal customer and has 40+ years no claims she was informed that her insurance payments would more than double from £320 a year to £680 even though the new car was a more recent year, had a smaller engine, and was less tax. When we asked what the early cancellation fee on the policy was we were told that she'd already overpaid and when the cancellation fee was taken into account she would still receive a refund of £27.50. So basically they would double her insurance to stay and pay her to leave early. Needless to say we found cheaper insurance for the new vehicle on compare the market with a different insurer, which was about the same amount as she had originally been paying and cancelled RAC early. What sort of joke of a business is this? Avoid!! Reviewed on: 10th August 2021

International Postgraduate Student Experience

International Student Experience after only 2 weeks with RAC. Signed up for black box insurance for Citroen C4. When installed, all the electrics went wonky setting it to km and French. When told about it, RAC said it wasn’t their fault and I had to simply deal with it. Proceeded to go back on their contractual agreement and demanded more money or they would cancel my insurance. So many numbers and long waits on hold just to be told there was nothing that can be done. Would not recommend and cancelled after 2 weeks despite all the ridiculous cancellations fees. Lied about it being illegal to leave insurance running

I contacted RAC insurance when I had less than 1 month left to run on my insurance to advise them that I had now taken out my new insurance with another company. I told them to leave the policy to expire but they told me that this was illegal!! and that they would have to cancel my insurance and charge me a cancelation fee which came to over £100. I pointed out that it my be illegal to make two claims for the same incident but not to hold two lots of insurance but the insisted that they were going to cancel and charge me, which they did. So it has cost me over £100 to have a moths less insurance cover!!! I would strongly advise to look elsewhere as if this is how they operate I dread to think what would have happened if I had needed to make a claim!! Reviewed on: 26th June 2021

Complete joke! Avoid

My car insurance was up for renewal, so I went onto compare the market. RAC wasn't the cheapest, but came in second. Hadn't heard of the 1st option so thought I would stick with some reputable (MISTAKE). Disclosed 2 claims on my policy 1 x storm damage & 1 x Non fault( this one went to court & took 18mths to resolve). Anyway set it up online, had a letter a couple of weeks in basically saying your Non fault accident doest appear on the insurance database in the correct format. Sent proof if not received your premium will increase ( appx 18.00 extra a month). So I contacted my old insurers who were great, they sent me an email confirmation Non fault etc. Forwarded it onto rac, which you have to wait 5 days for them to process. Had an email back after 5 days asking I make contact. Rang them, I was told the proof isn't good enough, I could of edited the letter and changed the wording. Plus the email didn't confirm who the underwriter was! So I rang my old insurers again, they sent it again ...also sent one direct to RAC to cut out the middle man (ie me). 5 days later email from RAC asking I call them. Email not good enough, needs to be on a PDF not zip file. I asked when they get the proof they are happy with, will the refund of recalculate my payments ( as whilst all this was going on they took a higher payment). I was told, no guarantee your payment will revert back to the original quote, insurance prices change all the time! How does that work out? Needless to say I was getting even more wound up. So I contacted my old insurers, they said they can't believe how ridiculous RAC are being. I said don't bother emailing me,please must send a hard copy letter, on headed paper - clearly showing you are the underwriters etc. I finally got the letter. Sent it to the RAC, Had to wait 5 days for a reply ,( I actually chased it up on the 5th day). Was told to leave it with them and they will email me, they did confirm they were satisfied with the letter. I had an email later that day , no apology- just confirming the payments. Needless to say I won't be using them again after my policy finishes. Reviewed on: 29th April 2021

Avoid! Overpriced and incompetent.

They renewed my policy without asking and charged £400. A week later, no refund and I'm told I'll have to wait another 2 weeks because of an agent 'error'. Same policy with Direct line for under half. That's what you get for being a loyal customer. Reviewed on: 29th April 2021
