Misled when trying to cancel the policy by customer services when I contacted them to advise that car had been sold. Not told there would be a cancellation fee levied plus a late payment fee for the direct debit being cancelled. Once that had been settled they levied another addtl fee for something else without any advice to me.

Wouldn’t recommend it to my worst enemy. Staff are clueless and have no communication with one another and gave me 3 different ETA. With little updates. I had to call them personally to get updates Made me wait almost 4 hours on my own at night time on the motorway. Disgusting service, lied about not being able to book a taxi prior to mechanic being on the way but 3 hours later they booked a cab with no mechanic on the way. AVOID RAC AT ALL COSTS!

Absolutely the worst company to insure your car with - AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Completely uninterested in your requirements basically 'the computer says, no' Was charged £55 cancellation fee for being 3 days without a car - they would not allow me to keep my cover until my new car arrived. I would never insure with them ever again.

Disabled driver unfriendly

On the 23rd of August Not only did it cost £135.22 to cancel my insurance for the 31st August they canceled it straight away so I am a disabled driver lifted without a car for 8 days

My mother needed to swap her insurance to a new vehicle and was currently insured by RAC. Even though she's been a loyal customer and has 40+ years no claims she was informed that her insurance payments would more than double from £320 a year to £680 even though the new car was a more recent year, had a smaller engine, and was less tax. When we asked what the early cancellation fee on the policy was we were told that she'd already overpaid and when the cancellation fee was taken into account she would still receive a refund of £27.50.
So basically they would double her insurance to stay and pay her to leave early. Needless to say we found cheaper insurance for the new vehicle on compare the market with a different insurer, which was about the same amount as she had originally been paying and cancelled RAC early.
What sort of joke of a business is this? Avoid!!

International Student Experience after only 2 weeks with RAC. Signed up for black box insurance for Citroen C4. When installed, all the electrics went wonky setting it to km and French. When told about it, RAC said it wasn’t their fault and I had to simply deal with it. Proceeded to go back on their contractual agreement and demanded more money or they would cancel my insurance. So many numbers and long waits on hold just to be told there was nothing that can be done. Would not recommend and cancelled after 2 weeks despite all the ridiculous cancellations fees.

I contacted RAC insurance when I had less than 1 month left to run on my insurance to advise them that I had now taken out my new insurance with another company. I told them to leave the policy to expire but they told me that this was illegal!! and that they would have to cancel my insurance and charge me a cancelation fee which came to over £100. I pointed out that it my be illegal to make two claims for the same incident but not to hold two lots of insurance but the insisted that they were going to cancel and charge me, which they did. So it has cost me over £100 to have a moths less insurance cover!!! I would strongly advise to look elsewhere as if this is how they operate I dread to think what would have happened if I had needed to make a claim!!

On Friday morning 05th/June/2021on the morning. I was checking my engine oil and I found out it’s running low, I called RAC and after 30 minutes someone came and he said it’s only the oil is running low you need to top it up and they did not check it properly, he only added the oil and I asked him. Where did the oil go?
He said that’s normal, job done!
I was 60 miles away from home.
And when I came back home around 7pm I check again and there was no engine oil, after that I called RAC and I told them what happened and they said someone will come in 90 minutes, after 90 has passed they sent another message saying 30 minutes and they kept on delaying us till 2.30 am.
I called up again and they said someone might come on ,later on at 4:00 pm someone from a different company, and he said you have to take it to a garage and it’s got leak. My membership is included unlimited fix up to £500. When I called them to ask for this and she said your entitled to do all the fixing at your own cost .
Which means they write on the internet what doesn’t actually go with the membership.
I lost my job on the morning as I couldn’t get enough sleep on the night, I bought the engine oil and I took a recovery to fix it and took it a professional garage that actually got some people that understand with experience unlike people with RAC. If I had to wait for RAC they would have wasted my day again and will never be able to take it to the garage as they did the day before.
Finally, I never had any benefits of this membership it was a waste on money and time. I also had to pay £161 for the garage+£50 recovery +£50 engine oil and I had to drive in risk of breaking the motor.
This will be uploaded online so people’s actually read and cancel their membership before it’s too late, money doesn’t grow on trees. And that my right and everyone’s to know the truth of RAC and how they treat they customers

My car insurance was up for renewal, so I went onto compare the market. RAC wasn't the cheapest, but came in second. Hadn't heard of the 1st option so thought I would stick with some reputable (MISTAKE). Disclosed 2 claims on my policy 1 x storm damage & 1 x Non fault( this one went to court & took 18mths to resolve). Anyway set it up online, had a letter a couple of weeks in basically saying your Non fault accident doest appear on the insurance database in the correct format. Sent proof if not received your premium will increase ( appx 18.00 extra a month). So I contacted my old insurers who were great, they sent me an email confirmation Non fault etc. Forwarded it onto rac, which you have to wait 5 days for them to process. Had an email back after 5 days asking I make contact. Rang them, I was told the proof isn't good enough, I could of edited the letter and changed the wording. Plus the email didn't confirm who the underwriter was! So I rang my old insurers again, they sent it again ...also sent one direct to RAC to cut out the middle man (ie me). 5 days later email from RAC asking I call them. Email not good enough, needs to be on a PDF not zip file. I asked when they get the proof they are happy with, will the refund of recalculate my payments ( as whilst all this was going on they took a higher payment). I was told, no guarantee your payment will revert back to the original quote, insurance prices change all the time! How does that work out? Needless to say I was getting even more wound up. So I contacted my old insurers, they said they can't believe how ridiculous RAC are being. I said don't bother emailing me,please must send a hard copy letter, on headed paper - clearly showing you are the underwriters etc. I finally got the letter. Sent it to the RAC, Had to wait 5 days for a reply ,( I actually chased it up on the 5th day). Was told to leave it with them and they will email me, they did confirm they were satisfied with the letter. I had an email later that day , no apology- just confirming the payments. Needless to say I won't be using them again after my policy finishes.

Avoid! Overpriced and incompetent.

They renewed my policy without asking and charged £400. A week later, no refund and I'm told I'll have to wait another 2 weeks because of an agent 'error'. Same policy with Direct line for under half. That's what you get for being a loyal customer.

Cancelled car insurance. 3 months left in policy been with them at least 2 years.
Said £50 cancellation fee so I paid by card . 2 weeks later they take £81.63 out of my account rang today they say it’s correct as I’d had the insurance for 9 months. I’d paid all 9 monthly payments on time . Even paid an admin fee when I added another driver earlier in the policy. My monthly payment S were only £36.54.
Also when someone ran into the back on me they were less than helpful in processing claim.

Good competitive quote last year, about £200. Early this year my catalytic converter was stolen. I enquired about a claim and was told if I do the car (23 year old BMW) would be written off. So, no claim. Renewal this year was for over £600. What? I changed company! I have been sent a Proof of No Claims Discount document. It included Accidental Damage and it was at fault. I had not made a claim. Customer services agreed. Acromas, RACs insurer, assured me “Theft” was on their records. Customer services then agreed theft is on theirs too. But, I cannot get the RAC to send me an updated correct Proof of No Claims. I am presently stuck with Proof of No Claims Discount with the wrong info, and successive emails to customer services yields no reply. AVOID!

My daughter had black box insurance through them. She rang to inform them that she didn't want to renew (as even though she had scored roughly 95% all year she received no discount for safe driving as promised). They still renewed the policy, and charged over £700 from the credit card used the prior year. Although they confirm that they have a record of her declining the renewal they are taking over a week to refund the money. Customer services staff are clueless and rude.
The policy itself was ridiculous, she was penalised for driving after 6pm and also for driving in 30 zones. Nobody is coming to remove the black box which they installed in the engine so I can only assume it will continue using her battery. Utter joke. We will be cancelling our roadside assistance too as don't want to have any further dealings with this company

Disgusted at the way my mother has been treated with her RAC car insurance.

Took out a few months ago then had a letter so say there was a problem with her policy and need to ring to sort it. Rang RAC car insurance to be told dont worry theres nothing on the system and no problem with the insurance. She was told to "ignore the letters" then has a letter to say her insurance will be cancelled in the next couple of days.

Again, another phone call which they say she put in a claim in 2016 but they couldn't tell her what it was for so said she will have to ring her insurance for the year 2016 bearing in mind shes had no problem in the years after 2016.

Rang her old insurance which they have no record of a claim because it never happened.

They have said they will over ride the insurance cancellation but will have to pay £300 to keep the policy which will be refunded if she can prove there was no claim.

So meanwhile I am sorting the paper work out from her old insurance to send to RAC to prove this!


Shocking customer service and really don't care about the customer.

I have had full RAC cover since buying my car , firstly included in the package from the dealer , when it came to renewal they made a great 2 year renewal deal which worked out very competitive so I stayed with them . Service from the sales team was excellent. Never needed to use the cover but when it was needed and a late afternoon breakdown occurred I was shocked at just how bad they were , far worse than much cheaper companies I have used in the past . It took 3 calls and 5 hours to get assistance which arrived at 1 am from a local garage recovery truck , the driver was not a great fan of the RAC and spent most of the time informing me of other long delays the RAC had caused and how common these errors are . He ended up saying I think this is wrong but I haven't got the tools to fix it , I could tow you to the garage but it'll probably take them a week or so to fix it and it could cost you a fortune... BRILLIANT , will never use them again . Stick with the cheapest next time.
