I turned to step change in 2020 my marriage had bro...

I turned to step change in 2020 my marriage had broken down , and I was left with a lot of debts so I owed about 16000, at the time, iv been able to put all my debts as one payment, so far iv payed just over 6,000 pounds in the last 5 years I'm glad I did turn to step change, they have helped me sort out my debts and now iv been able to sleep at night Reviewed on: 24th May 2025

Changed our life for the better

After years of having credit cards and our bank arranging consolidated loans. Thinking they were helping us, until it got to an unmanageable state. never give up talk to StepChange first

With the death of my husband and the loss of his income, i found myself unable to meet and cope with our joint debts. Frantic and having no impartial person to talk to, it was suggested i talk to StepChange, this i did. StepChange listen to me about my financial difficulties, then advised me on possible solutions. i decided on a DMP and from that day on i saw a debt free future again. There when needed.

I got into debt through no fault of my own, but Stepchange were incredible in dealing with my money problems, and spoke to my creditors to come to a fair and affordable payment. A life saver; literally

With chronic health problems and encircling debt I was sinking slowly into very much dark place. Like most people I left it to the last moment to deal with the debt having deluded myself I had things under control. Having come clean about the dentist was my brother that suggested I contact Stepchange. I was very apprehensive thinking them to be either judgemental and aggressive, or profiting in some way from my debt; I couldn't have been more wrong! The staff were friendly and professional keen to help get things sorted out. I have never felt rushed or belittled and with internet access I still remain in control of my account but with the support and guidance by the staff at StepChange. They provide a broad umbrella from under which one can breath again, and explore available options in a professional and calming environment of reduced stress and anxiety. . They are always there to answer questions and explain anything one doesn't understand. Their website is very clear to understand as is ones personal debt management quite a miracle of many stats. Wondeful People!

Due to mental health problems, I had been stuck doing jobs that paid little more than minimum wage for nearly 20 years, and had run up humongous credit card debts. Even though I hated my job, I carried on working for nearly three years after I claimed my State pension and started paying off my debts, but in the end I just couldn't cope anymore and lost my job. I was terrified I would end up homeless and living on the streets (aged 66) and really seriously contemplated suicide.
