Dare to hope,!

I have been very ill with cancer. During my treatments I took my eye off the ball as the saying goes. Was too ill to deal with post and many many calls from people demanding money. I was becoming paranoid about the phone,the postman. Well debts don’t go away I didn’t know where or who to turn to, my life was such a mess, I was even contemplating ending it all. A friend came here and said why don’t we ring Stepchange the debt charity. I had nothing to lose but from that very first call, they made me feel like we can sort this out together and took me through every single step. Every person I spoke with was efficient,nothing was too much trouble, kind and compassionate. Made me feel like perhaps I could live a life. Am not the only person this happens to. Quite a bit of paperwork which I found daunting but even if I was stuck on silly questions I always got a real person to speak with. I can’t praise them high enough Reviewed on: 27th August 2024

Best people to help if you have a debt problem

Having encountered financial difficulties in my early sixties I made the classic mistake of 'burying my head in the sand' otherwise known as adopting an 'ignore it and it will go away' mode. Unsurprisingly it did not but when I bit the bullet and contacted StepChange, just been able to have a conversation was a huge relief and with their excellent guidance and advice the situation was brought under control and I am now a couple of months short of being debt free. We spent several years paying high interest rates in an attempt to pay off our debts, but the debts remained the same after 5 years. We pleaded with our debtors to lower their rates but by then they were well over 20%. By chance we approached Step Change who enabled us to start paying off our debts which has reduced our debts.
