Dare to hope,!

I have been very ill with cancer. During my treatments I took my eye off the ball as the saying goes. Was too ill to deal with post and many many calls from people demanding money. I was becoming paranoid about the phone,the postman. Well debts don’t go away I didn’t know where or who to turn to, my life was such a mess, I was even contemplating ending it all. A friend came here and said why don’t we ring Stepchange the debt charity. I had nothing to lose but from that very first call, they made me feel like we can sort this out together and took me through every single step. Every person I spoke with was efficient,nothing was too much trouble, kind and compassionate. Made me feel like perhaps I could live a life. Am not the only person this happens to. Quite a bit of paperwork which I found daunting but even if I was stuck on silly questions I always got a real person to speak with. I can’t praise them high enough Reviewed on: 27th August 2024

I had over £40,000 of debt from loans and credit cards.

I had over £40,000 of debt from loans and credit cards. The money was used for bills and paying my mortgage having been made redundant several times in a short period. Without step change I think we would have lost our house and probably ended up divorced. My wife had no idea of the situation I had put us in. I can’t thank them enough for there help and compassion. Practical help with sympathy and understanding.

With great trepidation I made my first phone call to StepChange, to be offered not only effective practical help but sympathetic understanding. At no time was I made to feel stupid or irresponsible in any way, and every effort was made to work out a solution that was financially viable for me. StepChange came to acceptable agreements with all my creditors, relieving me of the necessity of continual individual communications with them. This was obviously a tremendous relief. Since then my finances are reviewed annually by StepChange with payment changes made where necessary, all the time making sure they are completely manageable. After several years the amounts owing have greatly reduced, and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Reviewed on: 23rd May 2025
