Dare to hope,!

I have been very ill with cancer. During my treatments I took my eye off the ball as the saying goes. Was too ill to deal with post and many many calls from people demanding money. I was becoming paranoid about the phone,the postman. Well debts don’t go away I didn’t know where or who to turn to, my life was such a mess, I was even contemplating ending it all. A friend came here and said why don’t we ring Stepchange the debt charity. I had nothing to lose but from that very first call, they made me feel like we can sort this out together and took me through every single step. Every person I spoke with was efficient,nothing was too much trouble, kind and compassionate. Made me feel like perhaps I could live a life. Am not the only person this happens to. Quite a bit of paperwork which I found daunting but even if I was stuck on silly questions I always got a real person to speak with. I can’t praise them high enough Reviewed on: 27th August 2024

Nearly lost my current account

I had one plan and had an amazing experience, my initial plan was cancelled after an few years, and a whole new plan started. Stepchange included my current account and I nearly lost my bank account. From debts to peace of mind

I had £24,000 worth of debt which never seemed to go down with all the interest I was paying every month. I found out about Stepchange from a friend. From the moment I spoke to them the weight was lifted. They were very sympathetic and non judgemental. They set my plan up and all the interest on the 10 accounts I had were frozen. I just pay one monthly payment now of which 100% comes off the debt. I currently owe around £11,000 and don't even think about it now. If anyone out there is struggling with debt please get in touch with Stepchange and make the first step to changing your situation. The process is so easy and the staff are all amazing. I am within a year of being clear of debt!

I started my plan about 2 years ago. I am within a year of being clear of debt, which was unmanageable before I entered into the arrangement. Very clear guidance and helpful staff. A non-profit organisation, so all my money goes towards paying my debts. Reviewed on: 23rd May 2025

From despair to hope for the future

When the cost of living crisis hit we started to really struggle and debt we had previously been just about able to pay we no longer could. We started to spiral until we came to a point where we thought we were going to default on our mortgage and lose our home. We were pointed in the direction of step change and it was the best thing that could of happened we got breathing space so all our bills stopped for a short time allowing us to catch up and focus in paying our mortgage. They then helped us to plan our budget and worked out what we had available after our living costs to pay back to our creditors. Step change contacted them all and handled all the repayments so we pay one sum to step change a month and they look after everything else. As time has gone on and our income and expenditure has changed it’s really simple to inform step change and they alter the repayments accordingly. I can’t say how grateful my wife and I are to have found step change and for the help they have given us we were literally in the pits of despair and they lifted us out and showed us the way forward. I was in a very bad place.

I was in a very bad place. My anxiety was through the roof, I thought I would lose everything. Step Change held me, listened, enabled me to confront my situation and deal with it. This was on me, no one else to blame but I was never judged. I had huge debt, in 3 months I will be debt free, I’m not sure if it will be an anticlimax, whether I will even believe it, but could not have done this without support from Step Change. My bank were pretty good too who led me to them. Had a succession of job losses, I may lose this one again soon but I will make debt free, no more credit, managed without, head came out the sand.
