Making a claim

I have used Swinton on and off for the past 25 years so was happy to take car insurance with them in November 2023. In July 2024 we moved house and as you do started notifying change of address. So I dutifully did with Swinton. That's when the nightmare began. Spoke to Toby and explained I needed to change the address only on my motor policy. So he asked all the relevant questions and said he needed to submit it to the underwriters to see if there would be a increase in the premium. He came back and mumbled something about a rejection code as the area was unacceptable. I asked him what he meant by that and he couldn't answer. Now the area I moved to has high end value houses in a semi rural location, certainly not a crime hotspot! He put me on to Lindi who just kept stating the area was unacceptable but I can cancel this policy and they would put me with a new company. Why, I asked? Please tell me why this area is unacceptable? She just kept saying the insurance company stated it was not an acceptable area. I asked her to verify who the insurance company was. AGEAS came the reply. I was stunned. We have a second car, insured by my wife, and she successfully changed the address the day before with no additional premium. It is insured through AGEAS!! Her reply was genuinely incoherent by which time my wife had entered the room curious why I was on the phone so long and started listening to the what was happening. I asked to speak to a supervisor for an explanation. I got Karen. I explained what had happened and wanted an explanation why two people living at the same address received such polar opposite responses. Again she appeared not to understand and stuck to the script of it being an unacceptable area. I recall saying regardless that my wife lives in the same house and that AGEAS accepted she is in an acceptable area (no additional premium) but Swinton say it's not. All she did was keep offering me a new policy with a different company or a cancellation of the policy. I asked for quotes for a new policy with a different insurance company, however her eventual reply was that none would insure me. As my wife was simultaneously obtaining quotations from a comparison website this was obviously another blatant lie. I believe this is the procedure when a customer won't change to another company to build Swinton's revenue stream. They get booted. Needless to say the policy with Swinton is now cancelled. I urge everyone to avoid this company at all costs. I dread to think what may have happened if I had ever had to make a claim through Swinton. Reviewed on: 5th July 2024

These guys are an absolute joke.

These guys are an absolute joke. Took up a policy with them and they did nothing apart from mess around from the start. Now cancelled the policy and taken out another with the RAC which was issued immediately and with no phone calls or silly emails trying to increase the price. Even when asking to be put through to their complaints department they cut you off! As i questioned, if they are this incompetent at the start of a policy, what on earth are they like in the even of a claim? They have now been reported to the obbedsman for a full refund of all costs. Avoid Swinton, it's really not worth the hassle. Reviewed on: 21st June 2024

Had a bump in my car. Swinton is useless

Had a bump in my car. Rang swinton got a claim number that was it. Two weeks later after many frustrating phone calls have given up . Any one must be mad to use this firm. I put in a complaint it was sent onto my insurer who said I had not put in a claim. And to start process again. No way do I ever want anything to do with this firm. Am of an age where the whole problem was making me ill . If u r looking for insurance DONT look at this firm Reviewed on: 15th May 2024

I had absolutely unpleasent expierience with Swinton Insurance today.Phoned them to update my home adress and expected premium go down since we moved into far better neighbourhood and keep our car on drivway rather then street.Insted I was advised that my premium will go up by £300 per year!Agent was unable to explain why,her guess was the postcode?!Decided to cancel my policy for exit fee of £50,went online and insured my car for £20 less per month on the very same "expensive" post code.My advice,do your research and choose wisely.I would not recommend Swinton Insurace. this company took money from my account for over a year and refuse to return it on the basis that i didnt explain myself. A classic thieving insurance company that hood winked me into a policy when it wasnt required then overcharged me for 11 months. AVOID THIS COMPANY Reviewed on: 27th February 2024

Total rip-off

Went with this company for my car insurance as their quote was the lowest on Compare the Market. Unfortunately after signing up and paying, and with the insurance already in place, they emailed to say there was "something they needed to check" so we had to call them. They then proceeded to tell us that there was an "at fault" claim for one of the named drivers back in 2019, which was a total lie as the driver never made such claim and their current policy clearly shows 5 years no claim, as we had honestly declared in the application. They tried to say this non-existent claim would raise the premium by £65! Naturally I said they can keep their policy and that I wanted to cancel while still within the cooling off period, so I can go with the next cheapest provider on the Compare the Market list which was only £15 more expensive, but hopefully more honest. I was charged a £25 cancellation fee which was ridiculous, but I paid it on principle. Clearly their tactic is to lure you in with the cheapest quote and then make something up to increase the premium once they've got you. I'm surprised by all the positive reviews on other sites, but most are probably fake, or maybe they just choose to rip off the occasional customer. Well they won't have my well earned money, but they can have this 1 star review instead. And there's more coming. So for the £25 they got from me, they'll get a lot of bad publicity. Terrible business sense. They are a total rip-off company and I'll complain to Compare the Market about them. Stay clear! Reviewed on: 16th October 2023
