American Express Credit Card 7th February 2025

Now I have a platinum business card and a personal card. I left my credit card details with British Airways and BA stole my money. Amex refused to refund me. I wonder if it has anything to do with BA and Amex being partners on the credit card. And the customer service at Amex was rude and dismissive. But they are very good at taking £650 in fees per year. Very poor service... Been with them for 8 years paying £650 per year subscription. This Christmas they stitched us, dropped the level of credit and refused all payments despite no defaults or any missed payments. We are now coming away from Amex, the benefits are not really benefits any more ie Airport Lounge access.... You can hardly get is.... Customer service for Platinum card holders is now shockingly poor..... Save your money, use one of the challenger banks such as Allica.... Read more Read less

Have been holding 3 AMEX for last 10 years and lately their quality has gone down. First of all the card doesn't work in 60% of shops (outside of USA) which is a big issue. Its okay to still hold it but the premium benefits it needs to offer are lacklustre in the UK. Lastly, customer service can be very good or very rude or uninformed. I cancelled a card to get an upgrade and then said that I am not eligible though my income being 5 times the required. High levels of discrimination toward existing customers also, seems to have popped in their heads, especially against small business owners. Read more Read less

If you frequently order Deliveroo (at least twice monthly), travel a few times yearly and could therefore use lounge access - the Gold card is almost a no brainer. There's also trip insurance included if you put your tickets for a flight or train on this card. Unfortunately, the Gold card isn't great for spending abroad, but it might still be worth putting travel tickets on it considering the insurance + the outbount spend bonus for spending in foreign currencies. I received my British Airways American Express card and set up a direct debit to pay off the full sum when it became due. Amex did not take the funds when they were due and subsequently sent me a letter advising they were charging me interest and a surcharge and threatened further action. I telephoned and they apologised for their error but advised they were not able to remove the interest from my account. I cancelled the card which required over thirty minutes on the telephone with an unhelpful person the other end. I also paid the balance. They then refunded the card fee. A month or so later they advised I owed them £16.44 but no reason given as to why. Despite two letter from me they continue threatening action. I shall write to Hannah Lewis who is their CEO I the UK. My advice is do not get an American Express Card, especially as nobody wants to take anyway. Read more Read less

Despite requesting multiple times to change my debit date from the end of the month to mid-month, nothing was ever done. Each request was ignored or mishandled. On top of that, I was advised to transfer funds to lower my balance, which I did, only to find that Amex still charged me the full amount without considering my credit. The credit was rolled over to the next month, which was not helpful. I asked for the credit to be refunded to my bank account and was assured it would be. After waiting over 25 days, nothing happened. When I followed up, I was told the system had canceled the request, despite receiving multiple confirmations that the money would arrive by a specific date. Adding to the frustration, I was informed I could withdraw money from an ATM. I even calculated my withdrawal limit with one of the agents. But when I went to the ATM, I received a message saying, “Please contact your bank.” Upon contacting Amex again, I was told I’m not allowed to withdraw until one year has passed, something that was never mentioned before. The level of miscommunication, poor customer service, and repeated failures to follow through are unacceptable. I expected far better from a company like Amex. If you are considering a credit card, I strongly suggest running away from Amex and transitioning to Visa or Mastercard. Their services and customer care are far more reliable, and you won’t have to endure the endless frustrations I’ve encountered with Amex. Read more Read less
