New DBS accounts opened 53 years after my first one

I opened my first recent account with DBS in September 25 and everything went very smoothly. Actually, my very first DBS savings account was opened in 1972 but, having permanently moved to London for work in 1981, you closed it in the mid 80's as I wasn't local enough and not sufficiently using the account ! Darlington Building Society - well recommended

I discovered the Darlington Building Society via Martin Lewis’s guidance sheet and I trust his information. His recommendation was well founded and I was glad to find the website clear and easy to follow. The staff on the phone are lovely and have always been patient and helpful when I have had queries. As I was newly widowed, this was particularly welcomed. The interest rates are competitive and I am glad I was confident enough to invest in a 5 year fix. Reviewed on: 29th January 2026

The best local bank still on the high street

Doing ok but needs to improve in key areas.

Darlington Building Society does some good things, for sure, such as its involvement with and support for the Stockton and Darlington Railway 200th Anniversary celebrations. But it needs to improve. It is regularly out - matched by the neighbouring Newcastle Building Society in terms of its range of products, its branches and branch network, customer service, relationships with members, and overall impact in the community it serves.
