Not really the World's local bank

2
I am a student in London but my family lives in Hong Kong. About a year ago I had the most ridiculous experience of my life. I was in Hong Kong about to go on to China to spend a month doing an important internship. In order to get the visa to China, I had to obtain travel insurance. No problem: HSBC Premier offers a travel insurance along with Premier membership. Fantastic! The visa desk, however, required proof. Okay, I'll just go to the bank and get a signed certification from them. Upon arrival I explain my problem at the Premier desk and I'm told they cannot help me because despite also being a Premier customer in Hong Kong, my travel insurance was linked to my UK card. They tell me to call HSBC Premier in the UK. As I was reluctant to spend dozens of pounds on international calls, they were kind enough to lend me a phone – until they closed at half past noon. So there I was in desperate need of getting my visa before my flight, waiting to get a very simple piece of paper from HSBC. And sure enough, as I spoke to the HSBC Premier UK call centre in Scotland, explained to them my problem and its urgency, they told me not to worry and that they would send it to me immediately." Great!" – no. They were going to send it to me at my UK home address by post and it would arrive in the next 3-5 days. "How does this help me? I'm in Hong Kong. Hello?" So I suggest: "Can you email it to me?" "No Sir I can't do that..." "Really? Ah, it's rather simple: you prepare the letter you were originally going to send to my home in the UK, but instead of sending it, you take the paper out of the envelope, put it in a scanner, scan and email it to me." "Sorry Sir, I can't do that, it goes against our security policy." "Okay well how about you email or fax it to your branch here in Hong Kong and I can receive it from your colleagues over here?" "That won't be possible Sir! We can only send it to you personally by mail. If you like we can register a new address and we will send it to your Hong Kong address?" Uninterested by the prospect of waiting two weeks to get a travel insurance, I told HSBC Premier to forget it and spent £100 on another travel insurance. All in all the World's local bank is an international mess, strongly lacking in cooperation between branches internationally. HSBC Premier is a waste of time, but hey, at least I got to have free coffee. Reviewed on: 12th January 2016

Happier

I've stuck with HSBC as they offer a decent service. I particularly like the speed that any telephone banking is dealt with by the premier team. This one might just be me, but my new card (about 3 months old) is already starting to fail to be read by chip n pin machines....will try to take better care of it! Reviewed on: 24th December 2015

WOW!

Card payment for AMEX card declined so long call to HSBC. Picked up relatively quickly, but then on hold while they looked into it for 12 min. Surely it's simple enough. I have money in my account and need to pay a bill I've been paying every month for the last 4 years! Apparently it could be a 1 off "a system blip!" Reviewed on: 1st November 2015

Stopped my card without clearly notifying me

I asked for a new debit card but was slow activating it, which led HSBC to cancel my previous card, before I'd activated the new one. I understand the logic around this, but surely they should be able to tell when I'd activated the new card, rather than leave me without an active card? That said, customer service on the phone was friendly even though they couldn't reactivate my card. Reviewed on: 18th October 2015

This account gives access to greater benefits.

Having recently being upgraded to the HSBC premier account i am aware of some of the benefits of the account but have benefited little myself. The main advantages being preferential rates on personal loans and regular savings accounts.I cannot fault the customer service received from HSBC and have received all documentation for the account very quickly from it being opened. I used to have an amazing relationship manager but ...

I used to have a great experience at HSBC, but a restructuring of the branch meant my account was passed around to so many different relationship managers, I do not have a reference point anymore! Reviewed on: 15th June 2015

Still a few good benefits

There's is still a lot to like about the premier account. Yes there are a few perks like free travel insurance, but what matters most to me is the dedicated premier line which means I never have to wait too long for my call to be answered. I think HSBC should look into dedicated premier counters in branch too. Reviewed on: 12th June 2015

Friendly bank

I have been with HSDC Premier for over 5 years. Overall experience is good, probably because most of the time I just use their e-banking services. Contacting over the phone is easy, and I rarely need to go to the bank itself to sort things out personally. Reviewed on: 17th April 2015

Standing order set-up got lost along the way

I went intro branch to hand in a standing order request form. After 2 weeks it still hadn't been set-up so I called up HSBC. They could see the scanned form, but weren't sure why it hadn't been set-up...so they did it on the phone. Solved the problem, but not something that I should have had to chase!
