I met staff of Newbury Building Society at Abingdon Air Show and liked the sound of the account which I subsequently opened in branch. The service I received in branch was very good and the whole process was very smooth. Since then I have used internet access which again is very user-friendly (I'm not computer-savvy, so need simple systems!). Reviewed on: 4th January 2018

Open 4 new savings accounts and clarify the operation of one opened online

Outstanding. It was refreshing to find a good 'old-fashioned' face to face personal service which was delivered superbly. Online facilities are available but there is a distinct line between these and the branch. This is laudable (unlike banks who try to push you into online services whether you want them or not) and what is more, the branch staff are willing to email/contact their counterparts online to answer queries when needed. Good service from an easily accessible branch

I opened a new savings account that gives a good rate of interest and is accessible at a local branch. The service was quick and efficient, but there is a lot of FCA rigmaroile to go through for a simple easy access account. I realise that this is a government/FCA requirement and NOT the Newbury Building Society's, but is it really necessary? It's not as if I were buying crypto currency or investing in unlisted shares! time to open new account

I opened a new account online but had to wait for info on how to pay in to it. I think the website said 'shortly'. I was expecting this in no more than a couple of hours but still hadn't heard the next day so made the phone call to check. The phone call itself was adequate, I was told you had a backlog and it would be a couple of days. Info on the delay should have been given either on the website or sent immediately in an email. Took a while. Open but not open.

I opened the account on line and later got the secure message "Your account is now open". I tranferred some money to the account, but it was returned the next day. There was a later secure message saying "We need some more information - where is the money coming from?" It is sorted now, with a good rate of interest, but should have been put the messages out in a more logical order. Reviewed on: 24th February 2023
