Newbury are the only company that would offer us a mortgage when we were applying for shared ownership. We had a large deposit and demonstrated sensible money saving behaviour over many years but had moderate incomes (one of which was a PhD allowance that most companies would not look twice at) and so Newbury were able to make a judgement that we would be good customers. All other places we applied to used only automated systems that are not able to look at a case and see that, despite income not meeting requirements, the customer could still clearly easily afford the payments required. We have had good customer service from Newbury over the past couple of years since we've been with them, and we are generally left alone unless we contact them, or for our yearly statement. No marketing is ever sent from them.
Negatives. First, we do have a very high interest rate, all things considered, so we will probably be switching to a cheaper option as soon as possible. Second, the company do not seem to be concerned about environmentally friendly practices. There is no option to opt out of paper correspondence and even when I send an email, I still receive a response by post. This needs to be addressed, as well as creating an online account option so that customers can keep up to date with their balance, get information on overpayments, and so on.

One of the few big lenders who continue to offer a real 'personal service', from start to finish we are treated as valued customers by friendly, knowledgeable NBS staff. Services we don't need are not 'pushed at us' and we are given very good factual, personalised information about products we ask about. Can't fault any element of NBS's customer service.

Newbury Building Society is very good in various ways as a mortgage provider, I have been with it for many year and on three properties. Its good products, very good consultancy, fantastic advice, save us from worries and save us money.

Though there have been quite a few times I got very good advices from them, I give only two examples: I am now applying for an additional loan to my property, I planned for a discounted variable, but I was recommended a interest-only option, with lower interest rate and more suitable way to repay for me. Also, about five year ago, because of some reason, I asked for a bridge mortgage, for which I will need to pay much more interest, I was suggested a better way (plus the adviser's very helpful time control), eventually I bought the property in that way. You can feel their attitude are allway towards helping you, and their speciality is able to solve your problem.

I've had several mortgages with NBS starting when I moved into self-employment and the high street providers wouldn't touch me, ignoring my previous earnings and savings. NBS apply a different approach; looking at you as a whole person not a set of numbers. They answer the phone, respond to emails and simply meet all expectations. I can't recommend them highly enough
