Review of the RAC, Car insurance:

Complete waste of money and massive increased stress

So my tyre burst on Sunday evening. Called RAC at 18:50. Assistant found my location, took details. Told me it would be at least an hour and a half. Text message cane through saying 180 minutes. It was pouring with rain so I pulled car well off road and sat in the passenger seat. At 21:55, text came through saying “ We're sending one of our drivers to rescue you. We'll be in touch shortly with the details.”. Then another text at 11pm “ Sorry if you're still waiting. It's very busy but one of our drivers will be with you as soon as possible.” That was the last text until Wednesday afternoon “ Just to confirm, we're now working to get a local RAC patrol to you”. A friend collected me and to me home before midnight. I was freezing and very scared sitting by myself on the side of the road. On calling and updating RAC, the person said they MAY be able to send someone earliest 1:30 Monday morning. I was given a ref number. After many calls holding for more than 30 minutes a time. I had a voicemail come through sometime during early hours of the morning say she hoped I was somewhere warm, dry and safe. I finally got hold of a gentleman at RAC on the Monday morning. He said they were still working on getting me rescued. I was really upset on the phone and he did apologise. In the meantime, I called a tyre man who came out on Monday and changed the tyre. It took 10 min and has cost my money that I really did not have. I am extremely grateful to R&R Tyres for their help. Late yesterday I had a call from the RAC breakdown man who informed me he was on his way to my location to rescue me! There will be a massive complaint going in to RAC and Hastings Direct. Exceptionally poor customer service and communication, significantly more expensive as well

I had a telematics policy (black box) with them which was working fine if expensive. Then I had an isolated speed warning which led to the policy being cancelled despite explaining it was an emergency with an ill family member on an empty road. Neverthelss I thought fair enough it is in the policy. Then several weks later get landed with a random cancellation fee that was completely unexplained with no communication to me about breakdown and they had already passed it on to a debt collection agency rather then asking for payment directly. I obviously ended up paying anyway but still with no clear written communication about the amount. No response to complaint I put in after waiting 7 working days. Would throughly suggest no-one signs on with them. Reviewed on: 9th December 2022

Their business is stealing your money by quietly jacking up premiums.

The business is set up purely to steal from hard working people and families. I was paying £46 per month for my car insurance. They auto renewed my new insurance at a rate of £428. this is totally unacceptable. when I queried this hike I was fobbed off by customer service. When they were meant to escalate the complaint, the phone was Hung up. This is a corrupt business practise. Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere for a respectable and reasonable cover policy. Gave up after eight hours stranded

When it went wrong, it went badly wrong. First (and last) time I called them out it was 11.30pm in November in a city centre multi storey car park. They didn't phone to check my details or location for 4.5 hours, then there was nobody available to come out. At 7am I was told someone MIGHT be out to me in the next 90 minutes. Lone female stuck in a freezing car park overnight and I wasn't a priority. After eight hours I gave up on these clowns and will be writing to find out why they can't meet a basic service. Rac insurance they are thifts

They are thifts ,my and my friend have the same isuue with them ,first they take your money and after they call you to say was a mistake and the insurance need to increse so stay far away from this insurance company. Reviewed on: 17th October 2022

Renewal up by 25%, painful to cancel

Wish I'd read these reviews before signing up with them. 12 years NCD and they raised my premium from 234 to 290. Been trying to cancel for 20 mins now. Their website says you can cancel online but the options not there, surprise! So you have to call, after 3 mins of irrelevant pre-recorded message, now on hold for 15 mins. This is one of those companies that makes you jump through hoops to cancel in the hope you'll give up. Reviewed on: 1st October 2022

Avoid

If you miss a direct debit - they charge you £20, I have been off sick from work since March and struggled to pay this month's insurance ( I had made 2 changes to the policy last month so had an extra £50 in charges) - I chatted to them to explain I had been off and that I could pay the £70 odd outstanding today and that going forward I will pay on the 29th of the month as I have started a new job, all was going OK and then the lady said RAC & BISL have decided you can't afford monthly payments and have cancelled the policy with immediate effect. I was shocked. I ended up having to pay a deposit with another company and go elsewhere, I will never use RAC or BISL again. Reviewed on: 27th September 2022
