Review of the RAC, Car insurance:

Complete waste of money and massive increased stress

1
So my tyre burst on Sunday evening. Called RAC at 18:50. Assistant found my location, took details. Told me it would be at least an hour and a half. Text message cane through saying 180 minutes. It was pouring with rain so I pulled car well off road and sat in the passenger seat. At 21:55, text came through saying “ We're sending one of our drivers to rescue you. We'll be in touch shortly with the details.”. Then another text at 11pm “ Sorry if you're still waiting. It's very busy but one of our drivers will be with you as soon as possible.” That was the last text until Wednesday afternoon “ Just to confirm, we're now working to get a local RAC patrol to you”. A friend collected me and to me home before midnight. I was freezing and very scared sitting by myself on the side of the road. On calling and updating RAC, the person said they MAY be able to send someone earliest 1:30 Monday morning. I was given a ref number. After many calls holding for more than 30 minutes a time. I had a voicemail come through sometime during early hours of the morning say she hoped I was somewhere warm, dry and safe. I finally got hold of a gentleman at RAC on the Monday morning. He said they were still working on getting me rescued. I was really upset on the phone and he did apologise. In the meantime, I called a tyre man who came out on Monday and changed the tyre. It took 10 min and has cost my money that I really did not have. I am extremely grateful to R&R Tyres for their help. Late yesterday I had a call from the RAC breakdown man who informed me he was on his way to my location to rescue me! There will be a massive complaint going in to RAC and Hastings Direct. I am not sure I can easily forget my experience. Reviewed on: 22nd December 2022

Crash / bang / wallop - avoid

1
Avoid at all costs - car renewals will increase from 450 to over 2200. They will renew your documents before the date automatically. You want be able to access any documents through the app - and your complaints will not be heard by anyone competent. Allegedly accidents will be placed on your records that you don’t know about and they depending on who you speak to will not disclose any information about the insurance database - they are a non advisory organisation but will charge you for legal cover and a insurance service they can’t provide. Fos to follow. Reviewed on: 9th February 2024

Shockingly awful

1
Called them to submit details about my own claim. Extremely unprofessional claim handler not knowing any law and procedures he should follow- I’m a claim handler myself for a different company so I’m aware how the process looks like. Didn’t want to take any information from me saying he won’t even leave a note on the file that I called. I was in so much disbelief for a second I thought I’m not talking to claims handler- had to ask him if it’s really his job title as he acted like he absolutely couldn’t be asked to do his job. I am patient and very much aware how stressful this job can be but this experience was extremely shocking. Reviewed on: 31st January 2024

1
I insured my vehicle with this company because of the name, wrongly thinking they would offer a great service but NO, they weren't interested so gave me the underwriters phone number, WESYBAY, never ever have I dealt with such cowboys, I complained to the RAC as it was them I paid but they couldn't help, Westbay told me my car was a right off without even seeing a photo, when challenged, they said parts were hard to come by given its age, its 12 years old with extremely low milage. October 2023 was when the accident occurred, my vehicle was fixed in January 2024, I was refused a courtesy car, Enterprise then called me to see if they could give me a car but because I had been told it was a fault claim they couldn't offer one either. Neither of us were at fault, the highways confirmed and sent an email confirming that traffic lights were not working, we both left on a green light thus causing the accident, how is this a fault claim? I received a letter which stated I should of taken more care, you go on a GREEN light. I was told to go to Richardsons the nominated garage to see if the car could be repaired, on arrival, I was told by a lady eating crisps on reception that I was early and the surveyor was at lunch, not a problem, waited, tried to make conversation and was pretty much ignored, made to feel like an inconvenience, the surveyor took all of five minutes to look at the car and said he couldn't tell me anything, it was a bumper for goodness sake. I got a quote from an independent garage who were eventually approved after me calling them again for an update, the garage was challenged saying it should be written off, Westbay were told that a payout would be less than the car was worth. Over three months to get a bumper fixed?, I wouldn't recommend anyone to use the RAC and Westbay, their staff do not give out their surnames, not allowed to WHAT? minus 0 out 10 would be given and that is generous Reviewed on: 27th January 2024

Be aware!

1
Was going to let the insurance continue for a further year but forgot my credit card had changed so they couldn't take the payment. Called them to sort it out but they were so rude and unhelpful I decided to cancel it there and then and sought a new insurer. The policy had ended as I had missed the renewal date but for the next few weeks they were sending me new insurance documents as though I had renewed and at the same time cancellation notices. Clearly one hand not knowing what the other was doing. Mercifully, I didn't have an accident while insured with them. This went on for a few weeks until finally I get a bill for £121.68!! - apparently because I cancelled before the policy had expired?? and for admin fees!! Avoid them like the plague. Avoid RAC they stole money from pensioner bank account

1
These crooks auto renewed an 84 year old pensioners car insurance without sending a renewal notice. What was £500 for year 2022 was renewed at 1,331 in 2023 despite no change in circumstances or claims. We contacted RAC to cancel the insurance within the 14 day cooling off period as per their term and conditions and was advised it was cancelled on the telephone and a refund was being processed. A few days later we contacted RAC again as there had been no refund or confirmation email of cancellation to be told the insurance hadn’t been cancelled and there was no refund pending. Spoke to manager who said this time they had definitely cancelled the insurance and would receive a refund in the next few days. One day later RAC had taken yet another payment of £1,257. We contacted RAC yet again and was told the money was taken in error. They then refunded the original payment for car insurance but we are still awaiting the refund of £1,257 that was taken in error and all RAC say is the refund is processing that was 6 days ago. The customer service team are rude and argumentative. I’ve scanned every email that came through by RAC and there was 100% no renewal notice. This is Theft. The bank are now involved and have also asked RAC to return stolen money. Avoid RAC. Reviewed on: 13th December 2023

Hit by third party insured with RAC

5
I'm currently insured with Admiral, but was hit by a third party insured by RAC. My insurance offered me to go through their third party company Auxillis, which informed me my vehicle was a total loss. RAC then contacted me the next day to transfer the valuation amount into my account. Very fast and easy so I could look into getting a new vehicle. Reviewed on: 18th November 2023

Tried to change vehicles on my policy and told I've to take out a new policy with another provider, and in order to leave to find another myself, I'm required to pay a £100+ exit fee. Complete daylight robbery Reviewed on: 16th November 2023

Joke insurance Co Ltd

1
I've had the black box insurance for 12 months. Their renewal letter is a 133% increase, a farcical amount. The black box wasn't working at all for four months. When I rang RAC to report they put the phone down twice. In the opening weeks I had 4 letters cancelling my policy and 4 letters saying it wasn't being cancelled. Reviewed on: 13th November 2023

Making changes

1
This company are a joke, just tried to make a couple of simple changes to a policy (change of address and new job - nothing unusual) with 5 years driving experience and 5 years no claims to be told this can't be done, and also told that I must now cancel the policy, even though it was an enquiry... Avoid unless you know for sure your circumstances won't change.. Reviewed on: 24th October 2023
