Disgusted at the way my mother has been treated with her RAC car insurance. Took out a few months ago then had a letter so say there was a problem with her policy and need to ring to sort it. Rang RAC car insurance to be told dont worry theres nothing on the system and no problem with the insurance. She was told to "ignore the letters" then has a letter to say her insurance will be cancelled in the next couple of days. Again, another phone call which they say she put in a claim in 2016 but they couldn't tell her what it was for so said she will have to ring her insurance for the year 2016 bearing in mind shes had no problem in the years after 2016. Rang her old insurance which they have no record of a claim because it never happened. They have said they will over ride the insurance cancellation but will have to pay £300 to keep the policy which will be refunded if she can prove there was no claim. So meanwhile I am sorting the paper work out from her old insurance to send to RAC to prove this! Shocking customer service and really don't care about the customer. Reviewed on: 21st April 2020

Pathetic customer service

Chose RAC due to great reviews, trustworthy, great response times. First time using them to report a car that wouldn't start. Unable to speak to an actual person, just sent a link to follow, paying an excess fee of £45 even before continuing with the report. This was at 14:30, the first ETA was between 15:30 and 16:30. This then changed to a time slot between 17:00 and 19:00. Meaning the wait could be up to 4.5 hours! Put a Plan B into place whereby my wife was coming to me with jump leads after work. She got to me and everything was sorted. RAC then rang to say they were on the way but I explained the situation, he apologised for the very long wait time and said to call customer services to arrange a refund of the £45. This is now proving impossible as I cannot get through to anyone that can help on the phone. Transferred multiple times only for the automated voice to say the line was closed. It's an automated hell-hole of a service, it really is. None of the options relate at all and if I do get through to someone to explain the situation they say they can't help and I need such and such department but then the route to them stops. It's so frustrating and pathetic. After this is sorted I'll be cancelling my membership and going elsewhere. Reviewed on: 28th May 2025

Unreasonably increasing the premium

Unreasonably high premium quoted for our replacement vehicle. Following the total loss of our car in the accident (non fault claim) , I purchased a new vehicle and requested an updated insurance quote from RAC. The premium quoted was significantly higher than similar policies offered by other insurance platforms. This increase appears unjustified despite our request for an explanation, and I would appreciate a detailed reasoning for this pricing discrepancy. I have repeatedly raised this matter over the past months, but no resolution has been provided. Instead, I have been referred from one department to another without any department offering a precise or satisfactory response. Avoid like the plague this is DIY insurance! My car was hit by a buss, the driver left contact info Arriva accepted responsibility, I have that in writing. RAC only log claim then you have to deal with underwriter yourself. The underwiter then required me to write to Arriva myself to get my excess back. Now I have an email from the underwriters solicitor asking for all the details of the claim again because Arriva have not coughed up. This is now 6 months later and my insurance is top for renewal and I have been warned that I will not be able to get insurance elsewhere and my premium will be higher because the case is closed. I HAVE A LETTER FROM ARIVA ACCEPTING RESPOSIBILITY AND I GOT THAT 6 MONTHS AGO! Reviewed on: 12th December 2024

Beware of hidden Car Insurance cancellation fees

I purchased a car insurance policy with RAC that hadn’t even started, yet they charged me a £45 cancellation fee and an outrageous £45 Insurer Service Fee (ISF). These fees were buried in the T&Cs and feel completely unjustified. The lack of flexibility and transparency is shameful. I expected much better service from such a well-known company. When I questioned these charges, their customer service agent, Alicia, was unhelpful and dismissive. A truly disappointing experience. I certainly wouldn’t recommend RAC to anyone seeking fair and reasonable car insurance. Reviewed on: 10th December 2024

The absolute worst insurance company I've ever been...

The absolute worst insurance company I've ever been with. I had to fight for a copy of my policy and was questioned why I wanted it. Online chat 'Anthony' cut off my conversation when i was trying to get to the bottom of the extra charges. They have charged me twice the amount I should have been charged and not issued a refund they were supposed to. I've contacted them about 20 times trying to sort this. I give up. Waste of space! Renewal increased by £400 for no reaso

My renewal came in after 2 years with RAC. They increased by £400 to £1150. I have not claimed or contacted them in the year. I have 9 years NCB and increased for no reason. Many will auto review and get completely ripped off. Shameful and criminal. I shopped around and got insured with less excess for £550. When will insurance companies be held to account. Don't use RAC online insurance

I helped a neighbour to purchase RAC online insurance. The purchase went fine but a day later they requested documents to be sent which we scanned and sent but three days later they cancelled stating that they had not received the documents despite email was sent to the same email requesting it.
