New service information being posted to current customers

I have had a few letters from the RBS in the run up to Christmas advertising new services they have for offers such as cash back on your monthly bills. I like being offered and informed about some of the services and options available but some of them did not really suit me or my buying and savings habits. I may make a change to one of the payed accounts in the future and use the 3% rewards on household bills they told me about in one of the letters. This will more than cover the cost of the new account and costs. It would be good for me if there was some way of giving them basic information about my buying and savings habits even if not the details online so that I don't get all the junk mail for offers what will never be any use to me. Change to overdraft without informing me it would happen

I recently went into my overdraft for the first time in a while and I had previously arranged an overdraft without a fee. I found to my irritation that I was now being charged a fee. I was not informed of any changes to my account in relation to this. This may be due to mail going missing or due to me having been out of the city for large periods of time over the last few years. It does seem to be their standard account practice these days but it still makes me angry for there to be unexpected changes and charges I am not informed about. I did try to get more information without much success but as I am out of my overdraft it is no longer as urgent for me to chase this up. Reviewed on: 24th December 2015

My wife and I have been customers of RBS in Rochdale for twenty years. We have three current accounts with them and a couple if ISAs. I can honestly say we have never - never - had any problems with them at all. The staff are always helpful and courteous; their online and telephone banking services work perfectly (though I haven't seen a bank manager for years); and the accounts always work well (except the interest rates, of course, are poor at the present time). We are, reluctantly, going to move one of our current accounts to another bank because of the special deals they are offering, which is caused by necessity in these difficult times. I felt I just had to send this after reading terrible reviews about the RBS, which are on the Review Centre site. Surely, it's not just me who's so delighted with RBS banking? RBS Select Account

This is a straight forward, no frills account. You don’t pay a monthly fee, but you don’t get any adds ons like free travel insurance. I think this type of plan is the best value for money. OK, the accounts with monthly fees may offer a lower cost package and make things simple if you’re going to buy all the packaged products anyway. But, you may find that the package includes things you don’t need or won’t use, or that the cover/ features aren’t exactly what you want. Or, you may not use your preferred provider. I prefer the basic account and then choose separate providers for the elements I really want. It may not be the cheapest, but I think that it’s better value for money. So, apart from having no fee, what’s good about the account? The main benefits are: · Branch network- there’s a wide network of RBS branches. From my experience, the staffs are friendly, knowledgeable and keen to help. · Digital banking- the online application is simple to use. It gives real time values and makes it easy to pay bills and transfer money at any time of the day · Mobile app- as well as the same functions that you’d get from online banking, there’s a facility to draw emergency money from ATMs using your phone if you don’t have your debit card. I think that this is a great feature- I’ve used this twice whilst I’ve been out having left my wallet at home. So what’s not so good? If you go more than £10 overdrawn, there’s a £6PM fee plus interest. This applies even if you have an agreed overdraft facility. I don’t have a problem with the account having a fee. However, the way RBS apply direct debits and other withdrawals can leave the unwary out of pocket. There’s a text alert facility available, where RBS will send a text letting you know when your credit balance falls below a certain level. However, this is only sent in response to direct debit payment, not other cash withdrawals. My own experience has been that these aren’t always timely- I’ve received text alerts 24 hours after the direct debit payment has left my account. Overall I think the account is good value and I’ll continue to use it for the foreseeable future. However, if you’re likely to go close to a zero balance in your account, particularly on a regular basis, you’ll need to take responsibility for close monitoring your account and not rely on alerts, otherwise you may find you’re out of pocket. Does what it says on the tin

For a standard, no-frills account I can't fault this. Easy to manage, very easy to contact customer services when you need to, and friendly helpful staff on the end of the phone. That's what you want when you just need to access your account with as little fuss as possible, and get on with the more important things in life. Reviewed on: 26th August 2015
