Review of the Saga, Travel insurance:

SAGA, overcharging for phone quotes by more than double

1
My grandma (who is 84, but well) rang up SAGA as her yearly travel insurance was due to run out, as she was only due to take one trip this year, she requested a price for a 2 week holiday. She thought it was expensive but thought it was just due to her age, so paid the £300. She then spoke to me, I thought that this was rather extortionate and checked on online price comparison sites, where I could get the same insurance, from SAGA, for around £120. She rang them back (within 2 hours of taking the policy out) and they refused to do anything. Their only defence was that "the policy sold over the phone had £12 million cover rather than the £10 million available online. I have also complained to them and received a very bog standard reply admitting that the £2 million was the only difference in the products From a company specialising in the elderly, this seems very unfair behaviour. She was not renewing an existing policy, and was not given the option of a cheaper policy on the phone (who would pay nearly £200 extra for that extra £2 million cover on top of the £10 million available?!). This seems like a very shady practice on their part, especially given a large proportion of their customers likely do not use the internet for insurance quotes. Reviewed on: 4th March 2019

truly outstanding service

Called the help line on holiday, they suggested I should go to the Emergency room, and made all the arrangements so when I got there there were no forms to fill in, I was seen straight away and no quibbles afterwards. Truly outstanding service, far better than I thought possible Reviewed on: 14th October 2025

relieved traveller..

Having not travelled for 15 years, Saga was very patient and helpful. I phoned numerous times for help with my husband's illnesses and every time they were helpful and reassuring and did not make me feel as though I was wasting their time. Reviewed on: 14th October 2025

Impossible to get help

1
A phone number is provided to call when you are ill and need prior approval to get medical help. It is answered when you call it but there is nobody there. After a while the call is disconnected. Fighting this system is bad when you are ill. The insurance is worthless. Luckily French people local to where I was sorted things and it was not terribly expensive. The knowledge that I wouldn't get help for anything should be noted. Reviewed on: 13th October 2025

The price was very competitive especially for an established name in the business. I hadn't thought about choosing Saga and thought they would be quite expensive. But, when I got my quote they were way better than the competition, I was truly surprised. The service was excellent, the documents were clear and in plain English. Also, I needed a 6 day extension to my insurance, which was given free of charge. How many insurance companies would do that! Reviewed on: 10th October 2025
