Dare to hope,!

I have been very ill with cancer. During my treatments I took my eye off the ball as the saying goes. Was too ill to deal with post and many many calls from people demanding money. I was becoming paranoid about the phone,the postman. Well debts don’t go away I didn’t know where or who to turn to, my life was such a mess, I was even contemplating ending it all. A friend came here and said why don’t we ring Stepchange the debt charity. I had nothing to lose but from that very first call, they made me feel like we can sort this out together and took me through every single step. Every person I spoke with was efficient,nothing was too much trouble, kind and compassionate. Made me feel like perhaps I could live a life. Am not the only person this happens to. Quite a bit of paperwork which I found daunting but even if I was stuck on silly questions I always got a real person to speak with. I can’t praise them high enough Reviewed on: 27th August 2024

Stepchange has given me control and and helped me learn budgeting tools along the way

I found Stepchange in 2018. Following a mental health crisis, and subsequent job loss my finances were spiralling out of control and I didn’t know which way to turn. Every time the phone rang or a letter came though the door I felt sick with worry dreading what was coming next. An ex-colleague found me in floods of tears and recommended Stepchange. I was terrified making the first call but need not have worried, I was greeted with a calm, friendly, reassuring voice and given advice on immediate remedial steps to take. The excellent support continued from there, within just a few weeks my DMP was set up and my creditors stopped chasing me for payments - the relief I felt was unexplainable, I could finally breathe and stop the constant worrying about money. As time went on and I felt stronger I was able to challenge payday loan companies for unaffordable lending. Some small wins allowed those debts to be cleared quicker. I started with over £14k in debt and a monthly payment of £88, in time I secured employment and I have been able to regularly review my budget and increase my payment to remain affordable. I now have approx 2.5k left to pay back and a debt free date of March-23 firmly in sight. Without the help and support from Stepchange this would not have been possible. Step Change turned my despair to hope

Like many others before me, despite a lifetime of financial prudence, a couple of years ago I found myself deep in debt. So easy to access new credit, I was rapidly increasing my debts. Citizen Advice recommended I approach Step Change, and after a thorough review with me they proposed a plan, which we negotiated to make it work for me. They put these proposals to my creditors, who agreed, and it is working. Slowly we are reducing the debt, and I can still live a good life. All thanks to Step Change. Reviewed on: 28th July 2022

Stopped me losing my mind

Id tried to manage my debt but the anxiety continued to rise. I was unable to switch to no interest credit cards and so paying a lot of interest. Each month I felt dragged down further into the black mud, my mental health was suffering. I contacted Stepchange and found the non judgement and practical assistance to set up a debt management plan unbelievable. The reduction in pressure for the companies to agree to an arrangement I feel saved my life. I have upheld the arrangement religiously, sometimes its difficult but I know there is light at the end of the tunnel. I also know that again without judgement I can contact Stepchange to renegotiate payments if my budget is too stretched with the increase in cost of living. Reviewed on: 28th July 2022

A lifeline when needed!

We had been let down in our business by 2 companies that owed us £30,000, and when we went to sell the business, ostensibly to pay off our mortgage, we had 3 interested parties,, but it came to no avail. My wife did some research and StepChange came to our rescue. There was no 'blame naming', just friendly, helpul advice. A great company. Reviewed on: 28th July 2022

Saved my life?

I was getting desperate about my situation some years ago. I had gotten myself in serious debt and didn't know what to do as my bank at that time couldn't or wouldn't help me. I was having dark thoughts due to this and suffering with depression. I was put in touch with Stepchange. They were amazing. They helped me to feel hopeful again and to stop feeling guilty about my debt situation. I am now nearly debt free and by this time next year my debt management plan will be finished, thanks to Stepchange. They have helped and guided me all through the plan and I cannot fault their service. Kind, considerate and helpful. And yes, they may have saved my life! Thank you Stepchange. Always help no matter what

Whenever you’re having a rough month, feeling low about bills, worrying about the plan and if I can pay on time, they always have options for you, puts you at ease and feel so much better talking to them over the phone, they’re very sympathetic and never judge you. I just had a baby and maternity pay isn’t great so I had a review and feel they really understood my circumstances and still get to enjoy time with my son on a low income.
