I was feeling lost and afraid with no one and nowhere to turn to for help. I was recommended Step change. I nervously made the call to them that has saved my life and helped me to live again.. I have a budget to help clear my debts and have confidence that it's all affordable They took charge of everything and advised me of my options and checked I was completely comfortable with my chosen options and payments. Overall, my experience with StepChange has been positive. I found the service helpful, supportive, and friendly during a very stressful time, and I am grateful for the support I received. However, there was one telephone conversation that left me feeling quite upset afterwards. During the call, the customer service adviser spoke in detail about her own personal circumstances, including having four children, working two jobs, and also receiving Universal Credit. While I understand she may have been trying to relate or reassure me, I personally found the conversation difficult because everyone’s circumstances are different, and it left me feeling quite low and uncomfortable after the call. I do appreciate the support StepChange provides overall, but I feel it is important that customers are able to discuss their financial situations without feeling compared to someone else’s personal circumstances, as people can already feel vulnerable when reaching out for help. I had the most awful year struggling with paying my loans following a massive and unexpected change in my circumstances. In a conversation with my bank, it was suggested I should seek advice from StepChange. I did (reluctantly) but the outcome was better than I expected and, thanks to the advice and support I received, I no longer receive threatening letters and my finances are back under control and I live my life normally without the constant worry that used to plague me throughout every waking moment.
