Dare to hope,!

I have been very ill with cancer. During my treatments I took my eye off the ball as the saying goes. Was too ill to deal with post and many many calls from people demanding money. I was becoming paranoid about the phone,the postman. Well debts don’t go away I didn’t know where or who to turn to, my life was such a mess, I was even contemplating ending it all. A friend came here and said why don’t we ring Stepchange the debt charity. I had nothing to lose but from that very first call, they made me feel like we can sort this out together and took me through every single step. Every person I spoke with was efficient,nothing was too much trouble, kind and compassionate. Made me feel like perhaps I could live a life. Am not the only person this happens to. Quite a bit of paperwork which I found daunting but even if I was stuck on silly questions I always got a real person to speak with. I can’t praise them high enough Reviewed on: 27th August 2024

StepChange is the solution.

I was borrowing and borrowing on the run up to Christmas 2025, and it escalated to a point where I was in an extremely dark place, my outgoings far exceeded my incomings. I ended up £5.5k in the red in what felt like overnight. I tried multiple different debt advisory services and everyone of them tried to push me into an IVA, every single one. I expressed to stepChange I was not interested in an IVA, I wanted to pay my debts as I accrued them. I want my credit file to show yeah he got in a sticky situation but he dug his way out. I'm currently 4 months in, I opened to repay over £400 pm back. StepChange collect the payment like clockwork the day after I get paid and distribute to the relevant creditors. They even drafted up a letter to ask if interest could be frozen, which all creditors agreed to. Staff were humans, understanding, polite and sympathetic. I was blown away at how personal the service was. The only and I mean ONLY reason it's not 5 stars.... is because it takes the portal so long to update after creditors have been paid, you are literally a month behind which if you are debt conscious as I am, I like to see the total amount collected and the outstanding debt amounts decrease, within a few days of collection. Help to sleep at night

Me and my Husband found our selves struggling to make ends meet. Step change helped us to get our debts in order. When I lost my Husband unexpectedly they helped me sort things and gave me advice of other agencies that might be able to help. Reviewed on: 6th May 2026

I was confused about my finances .

Life Changing

Increasing debt had driven me mad
